discussion FW200-C4 Condor. Trumpeter 1/48 scale

My latest and its a big and impressive one.

Even though only 1/48 scale this is the biggest model I have built. The actual aircraft was bigger than the Lancaster and B17 (I will be building both of these in 1/48 soon). I will be building bigger, the 1/32 Border Lanc and even bigger the 1/32 HB B24…

The fit of this kit was OK, the detail also OK but not great. It could really do with some decent wing spars and there are long, long seams that need a lot of sanding and filling. But, I would say that this is my favourite 1/48 build I have done, really enjoyable.

Excellent Barry. Your usual flawless finish. You won't be able to hang that from the ceiling with bits of string - you'll need chains :rolling:

I had one of these in the stash but sold it because reviews I read said that the wing joints were very weak due to how thin the plastic was, and there were also comments about the strength of the undercarriage. Nice to see you got yours to stay together Barry.

For anyone who might like a go at this, there was an aftermarket spar in aluminium which fixed the issue with the wings, but I don't know if it's still available.

The wing join point is quite true and a decent spar is needed. But it worked out.

Not sure but I understand that it’s a cannon rather than machine gun.

There is a YouTube video about Eric Winkle Brown and his memories of going up against what he called a ‘Kourier’, a Condor, in his Wildcat when flying off escort carriers. His favourite attack position was head on from just below. He said the ‘cannon’ in the front turret could not lower its aim enough to bring him under fire. He shot at least two down that way apparently.

If I had to guess, I'd say 2cm......don't think the airframe would stand up to 3.7cm unless structurally reinforced.

Barry, Very nice smooth finish to the paint. Nice work overall! Here's an idea for you: Wipe off the charcoal exhaust marks and airbrush these streaks with a dilute mix of spirit and a slight amount of black or dark grey. Carefully build up the streaks using 8 to 12 passes with a narrow spray. Let things dry as necessary between passes. The color mix is so thin that you won't muck things up if you are slightly off target with a pass or two.
