Well found!Hi all. Took a bit of digging but it's the Croix de Reconnaissance des Sous-Officiers UNSOR. It's awarded in recognition of valuable service by the French National Union of Retired Non-Commissioned Officers (Union National des Sous-Officiers en Retraite).

The bio I read has incorrectly called it the CdeG......I know that comes with a different ribbon for overseas conflicts so assumed this was a variant. The enameling threw me too. Thanks all. Reckoned it had to be foreign as it's mounted after his LS&GC, then I found a mention of a CdeR in one of his obituaries. Still took a wee while to work out what it stood for!
