I am about to get back into small scale models. Regarding airbrushing requiring a spray booth I contemplated using my existing cooker extractor & creating a removable cardboard enclosure beneath, sat on the cooker. Do you think this would be ok ?

Almost certainly. Spray booths sold for airbrushing don’t have that powerful a fan in them, I would expect one intended for a kitchen to be much stronger.

Yes< I thought about Madame's reaction ! I Thought if made of a cardboard box type construction, funnelling into the overhead extractor, I could simply lift it easily away. What do you think ?

I would worry about the overspray-it always gets somewhere you don't expect.....

Sounds good to me Stephen. You could probably use tumble dryer extraction hose to duct away the fumes if you wanted to as well..

I've not done it but I've seen it done....

As Jakko says the 'suck' will be far stronger than a specialist booth. Even at ours lowest suck my cooker hob hood is far louder and stronger than my spray booth.

Having looked at commercial ones it probably is not worth the effort. Any recommendations as to which one ?

You can fold it down when not in use.
Also depends what paint you are going to spray and where you are going to spray it…..you will probably need a P3 filter spray mask as well.

Mine is made from mdf and an old kitchen hood, I use it always on the max speed setting so it's a bit loud but works great. I blow it outside with a plastic hose.

You could probably use tumble dryer extraction hose to duct away the fumes if you wanted to as well..

I did that with the spray booth I bought a few years ago. It came with an aluminium-foil hose that tore on every attempt to get it over the exhaust tube, so I went to a store and bought a plastic one for tumble dryers instead.

I have a 1000 wide hood 3 speed and i also used an in line extractor half way down the exhaust hose just for over kill, the light unit fitted to most hoods is quite dim so i stripped this out and wired in anLED fitting much better light, for the sides i used 2 bits of perspex the rear wall is 12mm ply and on the front i screwed on some clear plastic curtains like the ones found in warehouse doorways so you can reduce or increase the working area and when you close all 3 curtains its powerful enught to pull them in a bit
the bottom of the unit i wall papered well not quit but i lined it with wall paper unused rolls masked in to place these keep the area reasonably clear of over spray, just replace once the over spray mounts up couple of pictures of it.
bought mine on gumtree for next to nothing and it works really well only issue i have had was the exhaust tube there was some escaping of dust so i duct taped it up

Excellent, wish I had the space for that to be honest. Much better than the small one I have……

I built my own essentially out of a cardboard box and Rubbermaid tote. 239cfm is more airflow than the average consumer booth, so I have to turn down the fan speed in the winter when it’s very dry and static electricity builds up on my models. They turn into dust magnets and the booth just sucks it right in.

I bought mine, ready made, it was just easy for me at the time, but I do love to see a proper home made example.
