I've spent ages looking for a thread I know has been covered on here but can't find it. I have a motorcycle kit that has some parts that have that awful "chrome" covering. I think it has been said that some kind of kitchen cleaner will remove it. If someone could kindly remind me I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.

bleach.......works a treat, just wash in water really well

if the chrome is really bad you will see it disolve in the bleach.......takes a minute or so......if its a bit better just leave it a few hours

Yep, I think that was discussed in my Honda 750 build log..........and bleach it was, just common old household bleach undiluted....

I found that Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner or Fairy Power Spray worked when I stripped the chrome sprue on my Jaguar.

Sorry for digging this up again but....

I have had some chromed plastic parts in neat liquid bleach for the best part of 24 hours and it is as bright and hard as when it went in. The "chrome" is gold by the way if that has anything to do with it...
What else WORKS.

Try DETOL, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dettol-Liquid-Antiseptic-Disinfectant-750ml/dp/B01ASESE0A , removes paint slowly from old Hornby dublo metal station parts. ( I left it in for a week plus )

Brake Fluid is also capable , but test on a piece of sprue as it may also disolve some plastics.

It is sitting in Brake fluid right now as it happens. Had some open in the shed and cant use it for brakes anymore....

I wonder if the gold colour is a tinted lacquer on top of the aluminium layer? If so I'm sure the brake fluid will get it off. Unless it's DOT 5 of course, which I use in my Triumph because it doesn't touch paint or lacquer at all.
If it doesn't work, try caustic soda, but very carefully as it will make the polystyrene brittle - don't ask how I know...

Not sure if this helps, but when I built the bandai C3PO, (which had gold coloured plating on the plastic) I ended up using some 'Oven Pride' cleaner from our local B&M, this stripped the plating back to bare plastic in a few hours, and was totally safe to use on plastic.

Hmm. Dot 3. Has gotten rid of the fake tan.
Now washed off and sitting in a bleach bath again to see if the lacquer was blocking it first try.

That's good Ian .

The only time I've had to remove paint was on some chrome , soon came off with bleach , but the smell was so strong . Next time think the Dettol might be used .

All the chrome is now gone.
Now I can paint it propper like.
