I've never been a smoker but have friends who have quit and seen them battle to get through. You can do this Ralph, good luck

Hardest thing I ever did! There are as many ways to give up as there are people trying to give up. Even with all the medical/chemical help available, the most important ingredient is willpower.

Just a thought though. B&H cigs (my favourite when I did smoke) are about £12.50 for 20. A twenty-a-day habit will set you back nearly £100 per week. Put £50 per week into a savings account and spend the rest in John's shop! You'll probably end up with Stashitis like me, but at least that's not harmful to your health, and the savings will help you upsize when you need the extra storage!

Go for it - you can do it!

Hi, good luck you can do it, gave up twenty odd years ago, as others have said it can be done, it's hard but you can do it.

After tax! Giving up smoking was equivalent to an over £6k pay rise for me.

One more hint Ralph - during one of my earlier attempts to give up (on willpower alone), I was chatting to an NHS advisor, and I told her I was getting really severe headaches. She asked me how much coffee I drank, which was something like 12 cups per day in the office, plus a few more at home. She told me the headaches were due to caffeine poisoning. Apparently nicotine decreases the body's absorption of caffeine, and vice versa, so it's a good idea to limit the amount of coffee you drink, or switch to decaf.

There has been a change of plan.

This may give encouragement Ralph.

With smoking cells in the lung are an object of fighting & deteriorate.

From encouraging work it has been found, for some reason, that there are some cells which ward off all the fighting & are unaffected.

Once smoking has stopped these magical cells then multiply & return numerous obstreperous cells back to normal.

So optimism Ralph.

I hope that you get through this Ralph. I so want/need to stop (again).
My bank manager says that he cant afford my habit!
I did try with gum last year, but to be honest it was like chewing a dead rats rear-end.
My Wife just stopped one day to the next so I know it can be done.
Interesting to read the effect caffeine and Nicotine. My two main vices feeding each other. Looks like I will need to get a grip on them both!
If someone says that chocolate and bacon are also a factor I'm screwed!

Dont know if this will help but Im now 60 and I believe I am in good health. I stopped smoking when I was 25 when my first child was due and have never looked back. Everyone I know who did not stop smoking went on to have heart attacks in their late 40s and that includes my father who died after his 3rd heart attack at the age of 56. You have to believe that life will be good again after you stop and it will. At first it will be difficult because you will link all the pleasurable things you to smoking but dig deep and know that when you come out of the other side you will not look back. I would also suggest putting all the money that you would have spent on cigarettes into a pot and then watch the amount grow. Never miss putting that money in, its a great incentive. One final bit of advice, if you do give in to the craving and have a cig dont beat yourself up and think you have failed. You havent failed and some times giving up is a work in progress. Just regather your thoughts and start the stopping process again. Each time you will get stronger till you get so angry with the cigs that you just smash the habbit. All the best mate.

Good stuff ... gave up several years ago (smoker for 30 years plus) ... bought a packet of nicotine chewing gum and used that for a week ..... not a puff since. Found my 2 motivation points and thought of them each time i got an urge ... 1. health .. want to be around as long as i can be for my kids. 2. expense ..... rather spend ZAR25.00 on something for my kids. Worked a treat!!
When u find yourself wobbling drop a line here .. sure the lads will motivate you to go an do something else .. cheers

I don't know if this had been mentioned but you may put on weight as twenty years ago I used to weigh 10st but I weighed myself at the doctor's a couple of days ago and I nearly fainted so it's diet time

How you doing? If you're feeling a bit like a bear with a sore head and want to scream and shout at someone - I'm here!

That is very sound advice. It's a journey. Just because you take a wrong turn or two doesn't mean you give up and go home. Just takes a little longer to reach your goal.

A big thanks for all the support.
I did not stop yesterday as I wanted to get the place clean and get rid of all my smoking products.

TODAY is my first day without smoking and so far I keep wanting to roll a smoke. It feels like something has been cut away from my hands.
At this point I am going full cold turkey because I really do not want nicotine going into my system.I am scared that I will just end up being addicted to patches but they are there just in case.

I am so determined to do this because I really have had enough of smoking and the cost of it.

Ralph,
keep your hands busy, and your mind occupied - avoid the 'smoking void' - a time where you aren't doing anything, and you light up to fill that void!
I always thought that the difficult time would be in the pub ( yes, in the legal smoking era ), but I found it was when I was at home, reading, or listening to music that was the most difficult

Thanks Dave.
At the moment my mind is not on really doing anything.I am just trawling through the net looking at fishing gear thinking to myself if I do not smoke I can afford pretty much any rod I fancy.

Hi Ralph
Good for you.
I remember those first few fag free days well even though it was so long ago. You will feel crap, cough like hell, be irritable and not be able to think of anything but cigarettes. No easy way through it. Just hang on in there and think of the rewards in terms of health, finance etc.
Jim
