Hi all , after totally failing to even get started on my proposed WW1 GB build and missing the deadline, I thought i would try a bit harder this time and get one done for this one. The subject is the Revell 1/72 Vultee Vengeance, which i intend to do in australian markings as used in the pacific on new guinea. This kit is the old Frog mould and despite being quite old is in great shape. Obviously detail is of its time but it fits well and should build easily. I wont be going mad on the extra details as i want to actually finish it before the deadline , and a few things will have to be added/improved but with a closed canopy i can get away with a lot!! Heres the box art and sprue shots , and a very amusing little note that Revell saw fit to include in the box!!!!!! cheers tony

Hi all , made a bit of a start on the Vengeance. Its going to be (hopefully!) a quick simple build , not too much being done in the way of extra detail. The cockpit is a one piece floor ,seats , boxes etc but im just going to use it with a bit of refinement and a lot of illusion. Its going to be covered by the ample canopy so not much can really be seen ,so im going to use careful painting , highlights and shadows to give the impression of details -all smoke and mirrors!!The first thing is to alter the radio and headrest to the correct style . The fuselage has some basic moulded on detail but an instrument panel and throttle quadrant need to be put in too. Thats all the alterations im doing in the pit , its all down to paint effects from here on!! heres the pics

Heres the latest bit of progress. Ive added a radio and tubular frame to the mid section of the cockpit moulding and an instrument panel and throttle quadrant to the fuselage. Thats all its getting apart from some microporous tape seat belts after the paints done. I also dont like the shape of the cowling front , it seems too sharp at the edge, so ive dolloped a load of green stuff round the edge which will be sanded and hopefully give a more rounded lip. The engine is just the front row of cylinders and a back plate ,but i reckon adding the pushrods and a bit of illusion painting on the backplate should make it look acceptable.I painted the cockpit and applied shading to the thick seats to give the impression they are thinner, once it gets a wash and the belts it will be ok under the thick canopy.heres some pics (not very well taken , i'd had half a bottle of wine!)

Ive now sanded the cowling lip and primed it , the profile is a lot better , not as sharp or thin. The engine has had a bit of work too, the cylinder bottom sections have had tape wrapped round them to thicken them up a bit and the crank case has had a wire ring and stretched sprue pushrods added . The back plate has been painted roughly to represent the back row of cylinders , once the engine front is in place and its in the cowl it should be fine. Im calling the cockpit done for now , just the gun to be detailed and added at the last stages. The bi-fold bomb bay doors have been scribed on the fuselage and next its on with the wings and elevators.

A bit more progress on the Vengeance. The engine is done ,painted and washed, and the cowling has had the cooling gills cut out. First ,they were represented by raised lines so would have needed re-scribing anyway , but secondly all the pics of vengeances show them slightly deployed so i thought i'd make some and have them in the open position. The wings and tailplanes have been attached and went on no probs , just a smear of vallejo putty needed. Note the unusual wing , the 'W' shape apparently came about as a result of mis-calculating the centre of gravity , it was easier to move this back by sweeping the outer sections than by moving the whole wing and all its associated spars etc.The canopy has been glued and now you can see why i didnt spend a lot of time on the interior! Apart from there being loads of framework the kit canopy is very thick , ( i recently got another one of these off e-bay but it was the original frog kit - the moulds were a lot crisper and fit is even better and the canopy thinner and clearer ) Next step , making the cowling gills. cheers tony

Heres the cowling after the gills have been added from plastic card. I had to glue a small strip on the inside edges to glue them against and a few of the gills needed curving , just roll the plastic card piece hard against your finger with a cocktail stick , as if you were rolling out pastry and they bend and curl. Ive also added the exhausts from styrene tube as the kit ones were solid and a bit skinny. Im going to leave the cowling off until after painting if possible to try and minimise the gills getting bent or broken off. heres the pics , cheers tony

As with the boomer ive now started the paint on the vengeance. The empennage (a*se end) and the wing leading edges have been painted white with halfords white primer aerosol and masked off ,and the underside has been painted with the custom mixed raaf sky blue . Ive also been doing a bit on the undercarriage legs . The kit items are a bit simplified with a solid looking piece representing the shroud at the base of the leg . This should be a hollow U shaped piece with the oleo scissor link just poking out through a hole in the middle. The kit piece was opened up and the middle drilled out , then a plastic card scissor link and collar were added to the undercarriage leg , a quick job but a big improvement to the look of the U/C. heres the pics (theres 2 because i got an old frog kit of this as well so im doing them both together) cheers tony

Looking a bit more colourful now, the earth brown is on and the masking has all come off. Ive painted the undercarriage bays zinc chromate yellow and got the undercarriage legs together. The kit wheel hubs looked a little small in diameter compared to pictures of the one in the museum at Camden NSW. so i punched out some bigger discs and stuck them on. Ive also been tarting up the kit supplied twin machine gun. This is not too bad a place to start and just needed the handles separating , a slot cutting in the armour shield , the ammo belts neatening up and the barrels replacing with brass tube. cheers tony
