Thanks guys for commenting. Yes, Neil, I will be glad to see that white plastic no more!

Info from Wikipedia
Seeking to augment the boat's firepower (given the inaccuracy and unreliability of its torpedoes), the day before her final mission, Kennedy had the PT-109's crew lash a U.S. Army 37 mm antitank gun he had bartered for to the foredeck, replacing a small, two-man life raft. Timbers used to secure the weapon to the deck later helped save their lives when used as a float while swimming over three miles to safety on an uninhabited island.

Ironic really that the life-raft was done away with to fit the 37mm and then the timber securing the gun was used as floats.

Getting hold of a 1/72 scale 37mm anti tank gun proved difficult. In the end I settled for this.

This old kit has no interior but you can see into the void. Baffles were fitted to the roof of the superstructure and the AA gun emplacements were lined. Then painted black.

First bits of bling added.

A bit more done.
The 37mm anti tank gun is complete. A bit crude but it will be fine.

The superstructure is just about complete and more PE added.

PT 109 had 2 depth charges. The kit does not supply them although it does give you a smoke discharger for the rear deck. I have started to scratch build them. Still need a bit of tidying and the cords added.

Good stuff Jim, I’m loving the scratch building and the PE it’s really improving it 👍

Geoff.

It's difficult to imagine how the 37mm artillery piece would help with accuracy - really would be point and shoot and hope you are flat when the gun fires. These boats were pretty much seat of the pants and, I seem to recall, not overly successful as torpedo boats - but better in secondary roles.

You are proving that it is possible to make a silk purse from a pig's ear :)

Top work jim , bringing this old timer right up to date , cheers tony
