Scale Model Shop

Latest Acquisitions (2021)

Hi all

So seeing as how the figure painting bug has hit I thought I'd take a punt on this.....

There are some very old PDFs out there online by this author which I've found very helpful and based on a forum thread I've found it appears it was done as a response to requests to update these PDFs.

This is very much aimed at someone just starting out and indeed there are somethings I'm not sure I agree with. For example, Tim grey primes and then uses black wash and medium glaze to create shadows before painting, whereas the author primes black and then uses a light shaded with a heavy dry brush to create shadows. Having seen the photos in the book, I very much prefer Tim's method, it give you a lot more control and produces much better and more subtle shadowing IMHO.

It also claims the techniques work up to 1/32, which if I'm honest I'm not sure it will, or will at least look a bit simplistic. One slightly harsh Amazon reviewer put it like this......

"This book listed a lot of old and outdated painting methods. A majority of the artists must have been using the same technique for 30 years. Its more common to start with the face....airbrushing the uniform gives the figure a more realistic look. Most of the figures in this book are clunky with gobs of very thick layered paint.
The info it gives about camo and uniform dates and variations was very good. That's why i have it a 2. There are better artists and better how to videos and books out there."

I think the reviewer is being a bit harsh but the thought of airbrushing a 1/32-1/35 figure terrifies me and certainly won't work at my usual 1/72 scale.....but it's the highlighted bit in particular that caught my attention and indeed was commented on my many other people.

Whilst all that information is out there on the web, it's great to have it all one place and covers things I've not seen before - plus I'm old fashioned and like to have book to hold - and it gives good recommendations on colours to use for wide range of figures. Plus there are things that I will find useful in terms of basing and other techniques.

So in short, it'll be case of use what I like and ignore what I don't but, regardless, it will help improve my knowledge and it will help at my usual 1/72 scale - even if it's not going to set the modelling world alight. That said the 'Marlow Method' still rocks!!

ATB.

Andrew

I really need to get a grip of how to paint figures. I really have no idea how to if i'm honest. I want to do so many dioramas but the thought of figure painting scares me. So if a book (or video) for someone with basically no knowledge of where to start is good, then i'm sold lol

Got back off holiday and had a few parcels waiting for me, early Christmas.

1/9 horse and colonel Burthe bust. Didnt realise the big difference between a 1/10th and 1/9th horse head.

Hi Everyone.

Just returned after my second part of my tour of all things south of the M4. If you remember we talked about supporting your local model shops when on holiday and Tim suggested Frome Model Shop. So after a long hike up the steep cobblestones I was rewarded with a wonderful shop full of everything you could hope for. The stuff they didnt have they ordered in and will post out to me once in. Fantastic service

I also popped into Dunks Model Shop at Trowbridge. This place was rammed with kits and a few accessories.

We also went to a car boot while driving around and I finally got a mini vice for the bench and some more wire

Now I always tell myself not to buy any more books as the house is rammed with them but I coudnt resist as I do like my maps

Finally today postie sent through my prize winning kit from John Paulding as my reward for winning Best in Show at this years MAFVA Online Competition.

Happy modelling everyone
Well done my friend, congratulations. Naturally the Committee here at Race Towers have also award you the .

Cheers Neil and Andy. Thats very kind of you to say. It was the Eastern Express 1/35 scale Bison kitbash. Here is the link MAFVA Online Competition 2021
Congrats Steve.

Good Job Stevie!!! It's amazing what you can build living in a Plymouth. Kudos Bro...

With so much hype over kits with full interiors, I decided to find out what the noise was all about and snagged this off evilbay for €35,08,

It's a box loaded with over 60 sprues, 2 etch frets and some really tiny decals on the sheet,

I also found these 4 puppys, all from the same seller and got away cheap in the bids,

The crate and box set also has resin stuff, including decals, from Verlinden in it too. Really happy for €27 delivered....This hit work a bit over 2 weeks ago and again I had to see it for myself as there was a discussion on here earlier about the really old ESCI figures that are included. Again, a real bargain off evilbay for €26,99 delivered,

I have the old RSO kit and this one looks a bit better for wear, tear and molding. The figures included look like this (not the best pics),

Somehow they remind me of the old Tamiya figs with their facial expressions and poses. All in all, they look like they have survived pretty well after all these years. The molding isn't really as bad as I had thought it would be....

Now on a side note....Since I have purchased these things, I have sold 7 full kits out of the stash. I am being a good boy and the buy vs. sell ratio ain't too shabby either..........I deserve a cold one!!!!

Prost
Allen
Allen, the figures with the RSO are ex ESCI figures and are slightly bigger than 1/35. Doesn't matter if you don't mix them with the other figures.

Cheers,
Richard

Just delivered something unusual.
That’s something I haven’t seen for many years….an etched brass Hoover kit! I seem to remember them finishing their revenue earning service on my local main line…Where are you sourcing the bogies from Peter?

Spent quite a few summer Saturdays spotting at ESD in 1974-1977. They were brought down from the midlands to replace the Westerns and Peaks around then, so were not that popular….later they replaced cromptons on the Waterloo - ESD line. All a bit soulless nowadays!
