Looks to have been a good show - thanks for the pictures

SAS jeep with two handled jerrycans - bit of a fail

Yeah, but you're close to Bovington. And Yeovilton.
Pete
Hi Peter you're quite right Bovington is 1.5 hurs by road,, if you want to go by train it's nearly 6 hours so I have to get the Minister Of War to take me as I don't drive it just impacts on my spending which is no bad thing.
regards Jim

160 miles/3 1/2 hours from me. Should have gone while I was working and could claim the mileage, but never managed to arrange a meeting close by! Yeovilton (FAA Museum) is about the same.

Trust you to notice such a glaring mistake, :smiling2: Simon.
I didn't spot anything wrong with it:sad:

maybe they are some captured early German version.... I believe the third handle came at a bit later date.. But dont quote me on it. I just know that they existed...

Ian - never seen or seen mention of a two handled version in any of the reference material I have looked at over the years

It wouldn’t make sense as it would always be off balance when full

If you find info on such a beast I would be interested in seeing it

Gary - well there we go, every days a school day as they say. I have never come across them before. Thanks

Is that one on the left the civilian version mentioned on the site? The other can is not really the same design just similar - looks like one piece body and possibly wider, but it does have two handles albeit with the central cross bar

I have still to see an SAS jeep with two handled cans though.....

Thanks for the piccies on the show guys. The displays look great...there were even some familiar ones from the site. I was drooling at the vendors and book section pictures...you lucky guys.

Just finished one event and looking forward to the one in Penang which I will snap pictures again.

Cheers,
Richard

1. yes , the View attachment 346564 is the civilian one
2. there are other versions of the non civilian one too , all look like field alterations , all stating used on motorcycles , but cant easily grab a good photo of them. will try again later.

Agreed about photos not showing , BUT , what percentage of vehicles were never photographed , particularly field altered ones , and used by special ops , i don't think we will ever know.

e.g. Aerosans were hardly spoken about 40 years ago , but were mentioned in Sven Hassel novels , then suddenly people started doing articles and then kits.

I also remember reading about the early lrdg etc ''borrowing'' anything from anywhere , so would have utilised whatever they could get their hands on.

Some of the two handled versions may have been three handle with middle handle cut out/broken , less weight ( minor i know ) and easier to get big hands/gloved hands onto one of the outside handles ???

They surely can't have been in widespread use - yes, agreed not every vehicle was photographed but we would have seen them in photos if they were being used a lot.

EDIT
Done some more searching and it appears that the two handle version was a TGL4368 and were not the 20litre cans we are used to seeing but rather, a small 5litre version only 12"x9". Explains the two handles - not enough room for three. Also why associated with motorcycles as would be easier to carry. Trucks and tanks being heavier users of fuel probably wouldn't bother with such a small can which would explain why we see 20litre three handle cans in photos
