It just occurred to me since I returned to this hobby about five years ago I haven't built an Airfix kit.
So the last one I made would have been about fifty years ago with stringy glue and paint in little bottles.

So my question is how do they compare these days with the usual well respected manufacturers?

Theyve really been upping their game these last few years , anything tooled after about 2015 is usually really good , if you want to try one that builds well and is nicely detailed but doesnt cost a fortune try their bf 109 e-4 or Spitfire mk 1a in 1/72 . You can pick these up on ebay etc for well under a tenner

The 1/48 Spitfire Mk XII I built for a recent group build was superb. The way they solved the old Spitfire open canopy (always ends up far too thick if layered) issue was really clever. Great innovation. .

I still torture myself with the older kits even when I have the latest in my stash...dunno why. Challenge I guess or nostalgia? The Re8 was something else and was fun with a mold older than I was. The latest jet was a Sea Hawk by Trumpeter that went well. The latest tank was an AFV M18 Hellcat...nearest to accuracy until Tamiya cam out with theirs.
Tamiya hasn't changed, still good, just not many new kits from them. Dragon kits are a puzzle with lots of parts if you fancy long hours of building. My two pennies.
