Hi John, tapering as Mike suggested and cut slots as Paul suggested is the way I would approach my pine trees. Remember to start from the top and slowly work you way down. You can replace missing needles with short static grass after spraying from the top with spray mount.

Maybe use the back of a blade point to press a slot to mount the upper branches rather than drilling ounce tapered. Ferns really came out great. PaulE

Hi Andrew, it's was my job, joinery, spent the last 3 year's at work restoring 5 greenhouses on a large estate.
Had the most enjoyable time of my working life, just me and a couple of people I employed .
The original greenhouses were made in the 1900s by Foster and Pearson's.

If you look back at John's dioramas, you will see that the man is very talented at what he did. His buildings and roofing on these all came from his job as a hand worker, just done in 1/35th scale and truly fantastic to behold!!!...…...

When he and his workers restored the greenhouses, it was before the camera was invented, so I wonder where the pictures came from?????

Ha, thanks Andrew, yes it was. Hard work but fun.

Spent some time this afternoon armed with a 100 mm inverted sander and re did the trunks. Took them to the bench and taking the saw blade from the base to the top put some bark lines in. Followed by a coat of brown acrylic.
Tomorrow have some ideas for fixing the greenery to the top and upper sections where I can't drill. As the dowel is ramin timber it's quite solid compared to balsa, don't think making a vertical cut will work without splitting.
More tomorrow .

Good afternoon all .
Points noted, and hopefully this second attempt is much better.
Started at the top, had to straight glue the first 3 , just too thin to drill. After that not too bad, only thing they should be 4 stems per group, trying to drill 4 is step to far, so two, even then the second branch hole has to be either above or below the first, getting two stems in from each side sometimes worked, but mostly didn't.

Could be more branches about mid way. Going to need to do at least another two treatments before this is complete.

Seeing that excellent greenhouse has brought back to me a quite amazing co-incidence.

In the 1990's I did a refurbishment to a very similar structure at The Duke of Westminster's pile, which is but a couple of miles from where I live. His was called 'Camelia Walk' and had these plants from all over the world in it. Like you, I had a great time. It was the time of the 'Troubles' over in Ireland and I was working in 'The Walk' when Lady Westminster came in to see how things were going. She had her two children with her and was on the Walkie Talkie all the time telling security where she was.

I was nearly shot there too. I wore a boiler suit whilst working there due to the wasps in the place. During my dinner break and forgetting about the tight security, I foolishly went for a quick stroll in the estate woods. A 'gentleman' armed to the teeth, quickly escorted me back to whence I came. "You're very lucky sunshine, I was about to shoot when I recognized you." An hour later a helicopter arrived. I found out later it was our Prime Minister there for a top meeting. I think it was John Major.

Sorry to off on a tangent, but what a coincidence, eh?

My word 570, you nearly became infamous and shot to boot. Great places these county houses, the green houses and gardens where I was had at one time in the 1900 over 100 gardeners , there was a complete heating system and two boilers. It had really been uncared for for good many years, until I think they realised they had to do something before it fell down .See we both move in high circles ! Not that it's done us much good .:smiling3:

Greetings all , lovely day, drawbridge is up at Race Towers so what better to do than gardening and modeling.

Conifers are slowly progressing, I do one set of branches then into the green house. Have 5 trees on the go , all in different stages.
Staring at the top is the worst part, as gluing straight on to the wood is the only way possible. Once the thickness increases drilling can be used.







Don't know how much further I can go with the remaining dried stock but think I can finish 2.
