Hi all.

This has always been frowned on here on S.M., but I've noticed recently that more and more members are posting their own photographs of the same build on the O.P.'s thread......and I would like any comments/ observations on this practice.

Personally, I think it detracts from the thread. The O.P. will start to think people will compare both images as the build progresses.

Also, I consider it good form and simply polite to simply ask the O.P. if it is o.k. to post your model on their thread.

Folks might also see it as a good excuse to re-hash a model which might otherwise slide into oblivion......

I'm not being miserable nor am I seeking any confrontation or friction, so please can we keep any replies civil and not get personal.

Cheers.
Ron

Agreed Ron,
But the person posting their model must give an explanation why they are doing so, ie to explain a technique or part that would lead to confusion if described in writing.
And no you are not being miserable, just stating a fact that some of us may have forgotten.
Mike.

I agree with you, Ron.
The only point I would like to add is that sometimes the "thread invasion" could be due to an excess of collaborative spirit and not to the will of re-hashing or make comparisons.
Anyway, asking the O.P. permission is a good and advisable practice.
For what I'm concerned, I will accept any photograph anyone thinks it's coherent with my thread/build without taking offense or being troubled.
Andrea

Personally, I don't care - I have a thick skin, but I can see how it could upset people, especially if it's off topic.................

Same Dave. Doesn’t bother me at all.
It’s easy enough to pass any irrelevant posts.

It can be intimidating to some, I have had this before previously on other forums, I'm in the middle of my build and someone comes along and 'Here's mine!' then plonks their incredible build with stunning photography stealing my limelight! Sometimes it's intended to help in some way but often I believe it was just showing off their mastery of modeling skills, which is pretty reprehensible really, impolite at best down right rude at worst. If I think showing something I've built is relevant to the thread I'd post a link, not a photo but never to over shadow the O/P's work in progress.
One solution in a previous forum was to be given forum tools to edit our own threads.

Miko (modest in my magnificence! Ha!)

Good points raised by all. Asking the O.P first would be best I think.

All good, fair and diverse thinking thus far.

Spot on Mico!
It would be interesting to read what Admin. and the mods might have to write on the subject........

I am very much against the practice, unless of course the OP has specifically asked for others pictures, or permission has been requested and given.

I'm much more tolerant than I was (good, strong meds :tears-of-joy: ) and can turn a blind eye these days, but would much rather see it stop.

I agree with all the above. It is only common courtesy to ask permission before invading someone else's thread.
John.

Tricky one....
I personally, wouldn't do it, because I think there is a certain "look at what I've done" element to it,BUT,I don't mind if someone does it in one of my threads!
Indecisive.... ME?..... I'm not sure!!;)

I've always thought it was intrusive, and I just pray that I've never done it myself.....please, anyone ,forgive the hypocrisy if I have, I genuinely can't remember.
But I wouldn't make a fuss if someone did it on a thread of mine.

I see it this way…..OK on a technical discussion thread as long as it illustrates a point, quite rude on a build thread unless permission has been given first, and an absolute anathema on a finished build illustration thread. Wouldn’t worry if it happened to me though.

Generally I agree with you Ron. A caveat might be if the OP has asked for specific help on a feature of their build that only a photo from another member will do to aid explanation.
I prefer to add a link to my builds if I’m responding to an OP instead of a photo(s) for the reasons that you mention. But I get that may be contentious so will refrain from doing so in future.

What’s this mean
OP is the Original Poster; the person that started or 'owns' the thread.
Having got that out of the way...

Thanks Miko, I was still ranting writing.

Indeed it has Ron and it is a matter that has been put to bed several times. A good while back there was a surge of this and I made a post about it that for a good while put the matter out of the way.
However this bad penny turns up every once in a while and when I see it I try to get the point across once more. Hopefully it will pass again and we will be free of it.

I cant recall the full word by word ruling but along the lines of it being allowed ONLY IF the photo is of help in solving a problem and the person that wishes to post it has asked the owner of the thread if is is OK to do so. It might sound pedantic to some but as some have said they see it as obtrusive, showing off, or just plain rude. Equal to butting into a conversation .

Thanks Ian and yes, this has been brought up in the past (2018, I think!)....I forgot that was the case. :upside:

Thanks also for clarifying Admin's position on this.

Let's hope members keep the above 'Unofficial' and polite request in mind, and it won't need to be accidentally 'Bumped' in another 6 years or so...... ;)

That's it in a nutshell. Thanks Ron for the timely reminder and thanks Ian for the clarification
