Scale Model Shop

Spots on the Internet (2021)

I dunno. How long's it gonna take to build it properly? A couple of hundred hours would give an entertainment cost of £2 per hour - much less than you'd spend in an hour at the pub or cinema ...... and you'd end up with summat to really be proud of and not just a few memories.

Look at Chris with his HMS Tiger build. Bet he's spent lots more than £400 quid on that but he's had years of fun out of the build with many more years to come sailing it when it's finished. OK, you can't fly this aircraft after it's built but you know what I mean.

I can spend that time with a 30 quid Revell kit. Each modeller is different. I just balk at the thought of spending that much money on a kit. 400 quid would provide heating oil for my house for a whole year. Kind of puts it into prospective when i calculate it that way

My take on this is its to do with technology ,their pushing just to see what and how far things can be taken ,what they learn from this project will carry over to others ,I cant see any profit in this ,ok there will be sales, the look at me brigade ,birthday and anaversary man who has every thing ,in the grand scale of things four hundred isn't that outrageous and I'm sure at the end of the day were see some cracking renditions of this beast we'd all love one , but honestly its not very practical for want of a better word and where on earth would you keep it ,not much more than a oversized dust trap.
Then again the tape and rivet brigade will tear it to pieces.
Another thought how afraid are these company's becoming of 3d printing its beginning to turn up in our hobby quite frequently now ,another subject for another day. Dave

From MiniArt - 'new kit coming soon'

Hmm - weren't all these bits in their full building kits?
Dave

Wasn’t someone building a huge diorama of this with all its associated support stuff? I lost track of it around the time both rail engines were built….

Blimey, that's a lump! :flushed: Tempting, but impractical - that beast would need a garage to display it in!

That’s the one, he used to post updates on Milmod……great model of absolutely pointless artillery…..there’s probably enough build capacity and material there to equip an entire armoured division……

This my be of interest...............
Still have the problem of getting accurate plans to make those 3D CAD models!

The dirty IPA used to clean the finished resin print is classified as toxic waste ( like used motor oil ), and has to be disposed of at an appropriate site ( bet a lot of people just pour it down a drain ).

Interesting stuff there Dave. I've been sceptical about 3D printing as I like sticking bits of plastic together rather than using computers to create scale plans. I guess the folks that like all that 'puter stuff can't resist playin' with it though, so now there's some ready-written CAD stuff about. How long is it going to be before there are online shops specialising in CAD drawings for modellers?

It appears, as usual, I'm waaayyy behind the times. Alas, it's all a bit late for me, but I think you younger guys are going to be having fun! At less than £300, I reckon that's within most people's budget - how many of you have spent that much on an airbrush/compressor set-up?

Oh well, I'd bet my dad would be arguing about how much easier modelling is now with all the improved mouldings, specialised tools and A/M that's available, that he didn't have access to as a lad - and my grandad complaining about all these new-fangled ready moulded plastic kits that's about! What's wrong with balsa wood and tissue paper!!?

Not if the waste resin wash is first UV cured and then filtered to take the cured resin out of the alcohol Dave. The alcohol can then be reused and the filtered cured resin can be disposed of like plastic.

Some of them, anyway. Mainly the ones who can actually work with CAD software, which (as a class) is one of the worst types ever invented as far as usability is concerned.

What, like Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory or Threeding, you mean? :)

It is, but the real problem is making the drawings. If you can find ones of what you need, then all is well; if you have the skill (and software) to make your own, same. Otherwise, you’re out of luck.
