On the Border Models Facebook page - further info on the Akagi/Kate model

The picture looks odd at first- surely the plane is facing the wrong way? - but the Akagi ( and the Hiryu ) had her island bridge to PORT, unlike 99% of carriers. I have seen various explanations for this, none particularly convincing. Whichever way you look at this, it's going to be quite an expanse of plastic - it'll need some strengthening to keep from sagging

I read about that earlier, the island was built port side rather than starboard to get it away from the ships exhaust...

You can see why here…this is her original configuration without an island. The island was added at her mid 1930s refit….

Looks like a fire hose is in use! Maybe she was on fire rather than blowing her boilers through?!

Nope, her exhaust was directed both out and down, what looks like a hose is the other exhaust stream….the funnel arrangement was still experimental at that stage. An earlier carrier of theirs (Honsho?) had rotating funnels……

Each to their own I guess?! Must be weird to see!
I had read before the war Japan was about 50 years behind everyone in technology... they must be 50 years ahead now?! :flushed:

The Hosho was arguably the first purpose built flat-top comissioned, in 1922 ( earlier had been conversions ) . HMS Hermes was lainched earlier, but comissioned later!. She initially had 3 rotating funnels & a small island on the starboard side, but on her first refit, the island was removed & the funnels fixed in the down position.

Blimey, with all that smoke you wouldn't need RADAR,SONAR,or any other AR to spot that in the middle of the Pacific!!

Interesting that they went for the pretty rare Ausf. A. I would have expected a C to have greater appeal because those can be finished to represent most of the war, rather than being limited to roughly 1939–40. But hey, it gives an interior to pillage for transplant to a model of a later variant :)
