I too had the camera bug, used to take shots of birds. I invested significantly in a Canon 7D and decent 100-400 L zoom lens and some primes etc, but I suddenly lost the urge and haven’t touched the camera for about 18 months....I think it coincided with me getting back in a bar band....I think I may have a limit on creative hobbies :tongue-out3:
Photography is so different now. My first proper camera was a Zenith-E Bulk loading 35mm cassettes. I used to spend hours, developing & printing - only black & white, because colour was far too complicated & expensive. I had a Gnome enlarger - I learned the art of dodging & burning. I can't imagine many people under a certain age knowing what they are! I flirted with Medium format ( Mamiya 645 ), but found that far too heavy & bulky! I ended up with a brace of Minolta bodies & a good selection of lenses. I saw the writing on the wall with the arrival of digital cameras, and flogged my kit quickly & invested in a state of the art Minolta Dimage camera. Lovely camera, superb lens - but ran on four AA batteries - you were lucky to get about 50 shots from one set, even less if you used flash.
I still have two film cameras, both inherited from my father, a Rolleicord & a Zeiss Ikonta ( which my father assured me he had 'picked up' in Germany at the end off WWII ) - they're both in deep storage in a safe deposit box - not because of monetary value, but sentimental value.
Now I use a Fujifilm Finepix SL240 - more features than I can understand, let alone use or need!

That Mamiya must have been something Dave, is that like the Hasselbald medium.The price alone was frightening. Still pricey second hand .

The Mamiya used roll film & took negatives 6cm X 4.5 cm. The Hasselblads took 6cm X 6 cm. The Mamiya was heavy, even with just the standard lens, and waist level finder - add an an eye level viewer and a long lens, and it was a real burden. I had to carry a tripod, if I was going to take long distance photos, and then it was unwieldy and slow! You had a certain amount of kudos using one of these, as they weren't that common & usually used by pro's. I had it about 2 years, before I finally traded it in for a Minolta SRT SLR, and two additional lenses ( direct swap, for new equipment ). My back felt the relief straight away! - Now that really is a byegone era. I have 'The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography' on my shelf - The basic physics of light & lenses hasn't changed, but at a guess that book is now almost a reference to arcane arts & practices!

I did my City and Guilds Photography years ago, buying black and white film in bulk and then loading into 35mm film cassettes, doing all the developing and printing. I well remember dodging and burning, having a slightly shaky hand was an advantage for that meant the edges were not as sharp so it blended better.

i think cameras have gone out of fashion a bit because the cameras on phones are as good as the “standard” digital cameras so why carry two bits of kit.

Considering how easy it is these days to just use the phone to get a photo I don't think I will ever return to my Cannon equipment.

That's a shame.
The Canon 50D that i have is my go to camera for things i have time to set up a shot.
My phone does some good stuff, but nowhere near the capability of a raw image from my canon.

Oh I agree Gary, i've taken some shots in raw image, spent several hrs taking shots of rain drops in to a barrel. To catch the one as the drop hit was unbelievable. Nothing compares to that quality.
John, I'm late (as usual, many of you would say... :cold-sweat: ) 'cause my lack of mojo is reducing my on-line time. Books are more attractive to me, for the moment.

Oh John, how I wish I had your problem!
I have been so damn busy of late by the time I can wrestle some time in from the field, I'm usually a physically broken man!
With the Missus on the phone constantly "just seeing how you're doing" and about a dozen other pain in the a## calls
I can hardly get done what I need to afield to be able to make it home, only to practically collapse on the way to the shower.
After dinner and an hour at most at the telly I'm usually off to dream world and get the bums rush off to bed
So Mamma can watch "her shows".
I'm old Damn it! I'm supposed to be retired, but if my expertise is needed and at times my supervision what can I do!?
No virus slow down in these parts, more folks that can are escaping "The City" and real estate here is through the roof!
We've even had to defer some land clearing and site prep jobs to others and still the calls for more and more firewood!
So relax my friend and do try to enjoy your free time, put about the garden, take on an item or two from the "Honey Do" list
and be glad you are not tugged at in ten different directions at once while Mamma worries and frets for you.
I tell her "I'm fine" and can hear her on the phone admonishing the boys for still depending on me so much.
I'm longing to do more work on my "Dragon Wagon' but just seem too tired.
Hope I'll find some time soon, I feel I'm being forgotten.

Well I've gone through the whole gamut of DSLR to compact to full frame and back again several times. I have sold everything and just use an Olympus OMD E-M10 MkII a couple of prime lenses including macro and a 75-300 Oly lens. Mostly I use my 12-40 Pro 2.8 lens as its sharp, quick and just the right size for a micro 4/3 camera. Haven't had the urge to splash out again and I also have a Sony RX100 and a Panasonic TZ with long zoom lens.Bbut I take my Sony out a lot especially around towns as its comapct, 1" sensor and is pin sharp so cropping is not an issue.
Modelling is different for me. Struggling at the moment to decide what to build next after the Mossy. Nothing is catching my eye

Jim, I can tell you've been busy by your lack of postings. Ive done quite a few of the lists, gained several points recently, but as we all know these can be lost with one " look "
In fact there have been times when I've been in a minus position, but that was some time ago. :smiling3: Don't over do it mate , let the boys take the strain .
Gary, I've not sold any kit yet, the cameras are now a quarter of the price for the same is not more Mp. I've looked at the second hand price of 24 - 105 lens, which I loved , when new it was £900, now £400 sh. Might as well just leave it in the drawer.
Hopefully we both will find something to build soon and return to bench .
I've been into photography for many years now, I still have a Pentax ME-super which I bought second hand with the money I got for my 21st birthday, I'm 52 now. I will probably get it out for my trip to the dales. I now have a Sony DSLR which I use regularly, it doesn't seem quite the same as the old film camera. Now the weather has cooled off a bit I have re-arranged the modelling room (the back bedroom!) and even doing a bit of modelling.
