Well, it's completed at last. Here's the build thread for those who are interested:

http://www.scale-models.co.uk/community/threads/tamiya-1-72-sturmovik.27829/

It's OOB apart from:

- Correcting the ejector slots under the wings

- Scratch-built cannon from plastic rod - some clumsy oaf broke the originals

- Scratch built gun site (is that what it is?) on the nose, from fuse wire - some idiot lost the original.

Overall it's been a good kit, very detailed and finely moulded, though there were some issues with the fit around the wing roots. I disobeyed the instructions by not fitting the main undercarriage legs until the final stages. This meant I had to trim them a bit to get them in, but it doesn't affect anything you can see, and fitting them earlier would have made masking the undersides difficult, and invited a visitation from the previously mentioned clumsy oaf.

The cannon are moulded integrally with the fairings, which in turn need a bit of filling to blend them with the wings, so I had to attach these early on. With hindsight, I should have separated the cannon from the fairings and drilled a hole to make re-attaching them easier.

Thanks to warnings from this forum, I was careful with the Tamiya decals, but in the end they went on well over a couple of coats of Humbrol Clear, with minimal silvering. I had to touch up some silvering on the white lines in front of the cockpit, which are printed as one decal. Hindsight tells me I should have separated these.

The Il-2 is one ugly duckling though - I notice it didn't feature in the recent 'most aesthetically appealing aircraft' thread!

I like it. I agree with the ugly duckling comment but a clean and crisp looking build. :)

Fantastic looking stormivik Doug , super build. I wouldnt call it ugly , more like 'purposeful' ! cheers tony

Fantastic build Doug, I always found the main wing a strange shape but it was certainly an effective aircraft.

Great build Doug, looks fantastic. It has a certain elegance to it with the swept back wings.
