My next big modern jet build. Just he F18 after this and I am back to my favourite WW2 subjects.

The box:

some additions:

I have not definitely decided to use the a/m scheme as there is some flexibility with the paint job. Hopefully, looking at this subject and the kit and a/m schemes I should not have a problem getting some accurate markings together as, if necessary, there is scope to mix and match between sets when a decal splinters....

I have ordered an Edward I.p. set as well.

all ready to start...

I have got started pulling together sub-assemblies for the cockpit ready to paint while waiting for the Eduard i.p.

here is the tub

Some parts for the areaa behind the pilot and control stick

I do like the resin ejection seats you can get. They are much better than the kit parts, even with Tamiya. I find cutting them away from the block and tidying them up a bit of a challenge. The vulnerable handles at the front of the seat broke. The one to the right was in one piece and glued back easily and perfectly, the left one was in two pieces and was a real challenge. I nearly didn't bother as it wont be seen, tucked down in the tub, but in the end i managed it. A bit bodged but as it wont be visable it doesnt really matter.
IMG_1889.jpg

Finally some part for the front u/c .
IMG_1890.jpg

Lot of nuts and screws in this kit plus metal u/c legs.

While awaiting the i.p. I have been getting on with sub-assemblies.

I dont know what detail will have to be removed from the the ip and panels but the parts are ready.
IMG_1892.jpg

More cockpit parts.
IMG_1891.jpg

Trunking fixed into place
IMG_1894.jpg

Intakes - they are hinged and should not be glued.
IMG_1893.jpg

The gun fixed into place.
IMG_1895.jpg

The top and bottom fuselage halves fit well secured with screws.
IMG_1896.jpg

Some advice for when you build Tamiya kits - do all this and you cannot go wrong...

First, every time you sit at your bench for a session with a Tamiya kit, say slowly at least three times 'Tamiya San knows best'.... that will help get you into the right frame of mind.
WARNING - this does not work with any other manufacturers products....

Then if something does not fit ask yourself, what did I do wrong?
check the instructions, check the fit, look closely and work out where you went wrong. Correct and test fit again....

I am really enjoying the building phase but I do hope the pe comes soon so I can decide what detail needs sanding off....

anyway. I have been working on the exhaust nozzles, lots and lots of pieces that come together beautifully.

I will remember your wise words!!

Hi Barry
Another big Tamiya kit for you to work your magic on. Already the quality is showing. Hope the PE comes soon and is not too delayed with the current crisis.

Well, this arrived in the post.....
8EEECA4F-4478-42F7-BFDC-86DBD399EAA9.jpeg

so I can get on now with the pit.

First up is detail removal. When I first bought one of these sets, years ago, I chickened out at removing detail..... but since then I have braced myself and have now used these successfully twice, but there are some lessons to learn.

First, there is no rule to say that every piece of p.e. has to be used. Some parts are impossibly small and are almost impossible to use in the way they are supposed to. Beside which, half of these small parts will ping off and get lost and half of those small parts that you do manage to attach will, almost unnoticed, fall or get knocked off and lost. I have never yet succeeded in attaching a small p.e. lever’s end to the face of the i.p...... Sometimes it just is not worth the stress of worrying about it.

What is important is to do enough to improve on the kit detail, that is it..... other than that life is too short.

Anyway to start with detail removal.... the easiest bit first...
97C89696-33DC-4EF7-9277-0A6B7B6828CA.jpeg

above, done and ready to paint before attaching p.e.

Here is the i.p. half way through sanding.
319F4D65-2B6E-4BF7-9287-E13737AF3284.jpeg

some lessons I learned. First you just need a flat surface for the glue to grip and hold the p.e. You don’t need, or want, a perfectly smooth polished surface. Second, use a sanding stick that bites, a fine one is no good and, let it do the work. Don’t rush, take it easy. Detail may need to be left on so carefully work around it. One trick is not to ‘round’ edges so use slow careful, even strokes of the stick, oh, did I say don’t rush.

i.p. done

I then glued the smaller bit on as it is best painted in-situ, attaching the p.e. to it won’t be a problem.

And after, note the detail left on...

Except look at this.....
4BE444F9-84F3-47E4-8238-8D3326F009A7.jpeg
I need to cut that part away carefully flush to the bottom. I was not looking forward to that but I do have a fine razor saw, which is the right tool for the job. So brace myself, slowly does it.....
4934BB99-A634-4C16-BCD7-41C3216E2D53.jpeg

oooohhhh ‘errr missus, as in the words of the great Frankie Howard, It worked...
121EB8E5-AF05-429C-9DB8-C22F5FDEA3A0.jpegJ

I did not catch the part in the photo but it is in one piece and I set it aside to paint and attach later... phewww

i am now ready to apply some primer.

here is a shot of the subs awaiting the primer....

And, to show how much I got done during lockdown while awaiting the p.e.....

1D4BD061-7F82-4024-9561-D4BD78162F9F.jpeg

I have a little bit of seam sanding on the main airframe to do and I will throw some black primer into the exhausts and intakes. I will then close up some hatches and attach a few parts before priming the airframe.

I will miss this extra bench time when the lockdown is over.....

I have been trying to upload about 10 progress photos but something is wrong. Something about 'images not as expected'...

Anyone encountered this before?

I have tried all at once and a few at a time, then I tried one i uploaded before and that did not work either...

That is a quality kit for sure Barry. Your work is only adding to that. Shame its such a BIG aircraft as I quite fancy that myself

Barry,
Count me in for this. There is a problem somewhere we are unable to upload photos at the moment.

I’ve not seen it, but it sounds like the files are in a format the forum doesn’t want. What’s the file extension? Chances are the forum will reject all files that don’t have an extension associated with a filetype it accepts. Thus, if the extension isn’t .jpg or .jpeg, try changing it to one of those.

If the extension is that already, try opening the image on your computer and saving it again by using the File → Save As menu (not File → Save) and then uploading the newly saved file. (This might just work because it will likely force the program to create a completely new file with the image in it, while discarding baggage that causes the problem. No guarantee this works, though.)

Jakko, I don't think its the format no one at the moment is able to upload pictures.

Now, its working....

I have done some base coats:

Wheel wells and parts are white but I find an off white looks best, specially over black basing. You can avoid an unrealistic bright clean white. These areas do get grubby. In the photo they look a bit darker than they actually are.
IMG_1921.jpg

One thing I dont like about Tamiya is their paint numbering system. Yes, they want to sell their own paints and in doing so expect you to mix colours. The real problem is that they dont give you the right colour names or labels so it takes some base research to find the right colours.

From that we know that Dark Gull Grey is right for US modern cockpits, but what on earth is the colour for the area behind the 'pit? I cannot work it out from the paint mix, so I did an online search for picture and matched the colour to paint samples. When I switched to MRP I sprayed spoons to get colour comparisons and, whle I have not kept up and done so for newer purchases, I was able to find a good match, USN Blue Grey M485 (MRP133) is very close.

Here is the pit, done with those two colours, plus a darker grey for some electronic warfare instruments.
IMG_1922.jpg

Then there are the exhausts, MRP's Burnt Iron is a rather nice shade for this.
IMG_1920.jpg

Next over to the p.e.

I have found, the past, p.e. to be a real problem so I invested in some specialist tools made for it by Tamiya, expensive but well worth it. The special clippers are brilliant, designed to clip cleanly from the fret and get into small places. The file is far better than the normal cheap ones and it take just a swipe to do the job. The bending tweezers are also a good buy for small parts. I have a small bending tool as well that I wont use on this job.

I have also found that Gator glue is best for larger flat parts hile c.a. is best left for small parts.

IMG_1923.jpg

Here are the main i.p. parts
IMG_1925.jpg

The problem with pe-painted p.e. is the colour match. The grey is too light but I just have to live with it.

I applied the Gator Glue to the ip with a cocktail stick. Any surplus gets squeezed out can be cleaned off with a damp cotton bud.

IMG_1927.jpg

The first part presses nicely onto the plastic, a perfect fit and now I leave it for half hour of so to set while I clean off the other parts and do another area.
IMG_1929.jpg

Cockpit side walls. I am being selective as to what bits of pe I am using. I want only to use those parts that are highly visible and will make a difference.
IMG_1930.jpg

The side panels, this now needs setting aside to dry before adding more. Note that I have masked and sprayed a section Olive Drab before attachiong the p.e.
IMG_1931.jpg

The. i.p. now with the second p.e. layer on. his must now wait to dry before I attach the last of the p.e.
IMG_1933.jpg

More pics shortly....

P.e. done, or at least those bits I have decided to use.

IMG_1935.jpg

IMG_1934.jpg
I did not bother with the impossibly small levers, from experience given the minute joining surface they wont stay in place long anyway, the few that wont ping off into the ether. I am not into wasting time. That said, the i.p. is not finished yet....

It looks a bit 'flat' at the moment but I will change that with other processes I plan to do.

The lighter p.e. grey colour wont stick out so much when I join the fuselage halves, fortunately, if at all. Specially once I have done what I need to do.

I now want to get on with detail painting and this will take a while before applying varnishes, weathering and other treatments.
