Hi Andy coming along nicely; the kit maker is using the wrong terminology for the 'roller box', when fitted on the stern it should be called a 'stern roller' in Anchor Handling Tugs they are much larger than on your kit. here is a photo of the 'Happy Hunter' when she was named the 'Smit Hunter' which shows a very rusty stern roller (dragging a very large Drilling Rig anchor soon knocked off the paint, 12 anchors had to be recovered and deployed to move one drilling rig)

A roller box usually comprises of two vertical and two horizontal rollers forming a box, this allows a rope to be deflected up to 90 degrees in any plane as it passes through the roller box. Hope this helps, sorry for the sermon.

The photo below shows the 'stern roller' removed after the 'Smit Hunter' was destroyed by a fire in the engine room when in drydock.

Keep up the great work. Cheers Derek

Thanks Derek. Thats some great information and pics about the roller. Its good to know these things for when questions are asked after the build.

Time to finish off the Upper deck. The 2 mouldings had to be glued from underneath and then when dry i had to cut out the tops, These form the support to hold the decks in line. The next part was to dry fit but not fix in place the upper deck. This is for access of wiring and installing all the hardware.

Now to drill a 6mm hole in the sides of the deck for the portholes,

Now we move onto the working crane. All the rollers and Jib pivots had to be free running for the working operation.

You will notice that i used Platicweld on this build. Very clean and tidy, welds great and only runs where you want it to.

Very nice work Andy, the Cherry Picker looks very realistic. Glad to see that I am not the only one that uses Plastic Weld. Cheers Derek

Thread owner
Thanks Derek. Plastic Weld is a fantastic product, i love it for this kind of job. Goint to paint this crane tonight. There is no mention of doing it at al at this stage and the next step is to fix it to the deck. I would have thought that that would make it difficult to paint.

Hi Andy, in a lot of the kits you have to use your own judgement and commom sense. Quite often it's best to leave things like Cranes and other sticking up bits off till the last minute as they have a habit of being snagged and ripped off with your sleeve as you stretch over to do something else. Personally I would paint and store things like the Crane until the main build is finished and painted, then fit the bits and pieces at the last moment. But you probably know all this anyway. Cheers Derek

Thread owner
Thanks Derek, I agree with everything you say, however, this build doesnt allow me to do this as the crane will be a working one and on the next upload you will see the crane drive motor being built. All this has to be in place for when the upper deck is fitted. It will be impossible to do after, just one of those obsticles to contend with i guess.

Cheers

Wow a working crane, you certainly like a challenge - great stuff. Cheers Derek

Thread owner
Lol. Everything will be operational on this boat Derek, Crane, Radars, Lights, Anchors and a few other bits i think.

lol, Bagpipes would have cost less than the unit i think.

As mentioned earlier, here is the crane swivel mechanism. This as it suggests makes the crane turn left and right. There are still more motors yet as you would imagine, these make it rise and another works the winch.

Whilst carrying on with the build im still painting the crane so ive jumped a few steps, next step im going on is to build the towing assembley,

View attachment 54528

This part will hold a few components not only the towing winch.

Cheers

Andy
