One problem you may have if you ever stop having to take it, is … shaking hands. I took propranolol for about seven years for something else entirely, and when I stopped, I couldn’t do any modelling for a number of days because of my hands shaking just enough that it was almost impossible to do any fine work.

Oh, and for good SF: The Expanse, both the novels (by James S.A. Corey) and the TV series (on Amazon Prime).

Checked out 'The Expanse'. Turns out it has expanded to eight books and a collection of short stories and novellas. I will be giving it a try, just not found the right supplier yet. I won't deal with Amazon so I'll give the TV series a miss.

Yes, eight novels so far, the ninth (and final) coming in November, I think. They’re really three trilogies that form one large story. I’ve not read the novellas, but I understand they support the main story.

As for the TV show, I don’t think I’m exaggerating if I say it’s the best SF on TV since at least Babylon 5 — or possibly ever — so it’s possibly a bit unfortunate you won’t do Amazon

Have you read the Dune books? They are also loosely grouped into threes.

I've not watched any of the Sci Fi programmes that have appeared on TV - except The Mandalorian - since the very first series of Star Trek (see below). I was disillusioned to find that I'd seen most of the plot lines in Sci Fi short stories of the thirties and forties.

There's gotta be a chance it will appear on DVD eventually?

No, my only exposure to Dune has been the 1980s movie and the 1990s computer game. I can’t say the setting appeals to me overly much, so the prospect of reading thousands of pages about it doesn’t either

I wouldn’t know about that What I do know is that you’ve not missed much by not seeing any Star Trek shows from recent years … gods, what drivel!

I sort of doubt that. The show is made by one of the larger streaming services, so what would be their incentive for releasing it on DVD?

Yeah. The relationship between the books and the film is much the same as the relationship between the law and justice or religion and the Creator - ie none to speak of.

I can also highly recommend Dune- the film didn't come close to the intellect of the books

Thinking about it, there's a common sort of theme here.

Dune
Starship Troopers
Day of the Triffids
War of the Worlds (the original)
Fantastic Voyage
The Time Machine

and many others.... All good, solid Sci Fi stories with lots of ideas and themes butchered by the film industry.

Yet we've had:

Jurassic Park (et al)
I, Robot
Bicentennial Man
Good Omens
Lord of the Rings (et al)

OK. I know some are fantasy not Sci Fi but they were both lumped together with horror at various times.

... all of which have kept some original ideas without totally descending into B-movie horror themes or strictly CGI spectacles.

I will agree with you on most of those butchered as films, but I thought the Lord of The Rings Trilogy were well done generally, the Hobbit films on the other hand……
For fans of the Stainless Steel Rat, try Frank Herberts « Dosadi Experiment » and « Whipping Star »

I bought five of the suggested books - inc. Icefire but not Vortex. I'll get through those first then have a look for the rest.

OK Dave an i think you will enjoy ICEFIRE as its a crackin story an i could not put this down once i got into it so ENJOY but get vortex if you can as another great read
