Trumpeter 1/24 Hawker Hurricane IID trop

More pictures, not necessarily of the specific aircraft I am building but all add to the trail of evidence of how I need to depict this aircraft.

Here is a colour print that suggests the codes should be Sky - so, MSG or Sky, I think MSG but I am not certain. Anyone else have a view?


These are IID’s of 6 squadron but not necessarily this aircraft.




There is this on the 6 Squadron website, what a great picture though not necessarily evidence of anything.
Looking good Barry, I have a couple of sky blue colours and they do seem to vary quite significantly. I think I used it on one of my spitfires a while back. Be interested in which sky you opt for?

I have been progressing the cockpit. After base coats I did the detail painting, a semi matt varnish then a wash, metal powders and then the etch.

Here is how she looks now

Officially, as of 2/7/42, according to AMO A.664/42, the squadron codes should be Sky. They certainly don't match the white of the roundel.

You are right about the yellow leading edges they seem rare on aircraft in the tropical scheme.

Thanks Steve. Sky it is. Mind you one picture is dated July 1942, so!!!

I built their 1/24 spit a good while ago and was also pleased with the way it built up.
Looking at the photos you posted I agree that the codes are not white. Due to the tone of them I also think they are to light to be MSG so my guess would be sky.

I had a problem joining the fuselage halves and spotted the problem. It was where the seatbelts attach at the back of the armour plate. It was an easy fix, I just cut away a chunk of plastic from behind the seat.

the fuselage halves match up nicely but, for some reason there is a ridge on the nose. So what I decided to do was cement it into place everywhere except this nose join and adjust it separately for which I may use c.a. initially to hold it together in the right place and then apply cement to the rest of the join.

In these pics you can see how the sides match up perfectly along the rest of the fuselage, the ridge behind the pit and right at the front. The underside is equally as good

Below is a pic of the pit. It is really quite nice even without extra detailing, apart from the ip that is.

I left it overnight to dry before sorting the nose later today.

I used thin c.a. to reduce the ridge on the nose. I was able to level up a lot but it was not even al the way down. I ended up using thick c.a. to partly gap fill and secure the join.

Tomorrow I will sand again then decide whether another treatment of this or a Mr Dissolved Putty to finish.

I have pulled together the 40mm cannon and drilled the barrels.

Wings are largely completed. I am inclined to cement the flaps up, most of the time, I like to see the clean lines of the aircraft.

That ridge along the nose came right with sanding combined with Mr Dissolved Putty.

Your usual careful, well considered work. The cockpit looks really nice. Good job on the nose join in front of the cockpit. A lot of work but it's an area that is very noticeable.

Prop and spinner painted. Would this prop have been wood or metal ? Does anyone know ?

the masks behaved well for vinyl.
 
A bit of quick research seems to indicate that only the early two-bladed propeller was made of wood, while all the three-bladed ones were metal.

That pretty much confirms what I thought. I had some doubts when I read a posting recently on one of the FB groups. Thanks Jakko, a second opinion is always welcome.
 
I suspect you can’t really go wrong painting it as a metal one — you could always claim it got refitted during an overhaul :)

although I already laid down the cockpit grey green I nevertheless did the black primer to ensure consistency in the final finish with the rest of the build.

That bit of scrap tape on the wing was removed before priming...

There are a few minor flaws shown up by the primer now to sort before I start a base coat. Overall though it looks pretty good.
 
I have not looked up the details (maybe later) but not all Hurricanes had metal propellers.

I have to say that I am loving this build. For a large scale kit the engineering is pretty traditional, simple clamshell fuselage, no slide moulding and it really benefits from this. The detail is good enough for most people, giving plenty of potential for those who want to add more. Looking at it, the shape is good and it really does look like a Hurricane. I would describe this as a model that wants to be built. The fit is much better than that Trumpy SU-25 for sure. I will certainly build another Trumpy 1/24 Hurricane in future as it is so enjoyable, with which I may well do a lot more ‘detailing up’. There will be plenty of the Maketar masks left for one or two more Hurris.

the Montex vinyl masks are behaving better than some vinyl. Not good enough for the markings but seem to be working ok for the lights.

I got the decals out to take a look and even looking at them reminds me of why Trumpy decals should never be used. The main problem of course is how they just don’t hold together and splinter but it is also the way Trumpy seem to always get the colours wrong. Look how bright the red is, nothing like the red used during he war. The blue also looks wrong.

The only decals I will use, with at least two coats of liquid decal film in the hope of holding them together, will be the aircraft serial numbers and stencils. The codes, flashes and roundels will be painted with the Maketar kabuki tape masks. Nowhere close to that just yet, of course....
