Wildcat, has a two tone colour scheme. My usual reference for the Lynx look-a-likes is the sound, their rotor setup is very distinct. Bit like Chinooks, no-one mistakes them due to their identifying Woka-Woka sound!!!Two helicopters flew past today, too far to properly make out what they were even when I grabbed my binoculars. However, if I had to make a guess I’d say they were probably Lynxes, and in two-colour camouflage, which is odd because I can’t imagine who would be flying camouflaged Lynxes around here, let alone towards the sea. They were too sleek to be Pumas, but the only sleek helicopters you see around here sometimes are AW139s, but they’re dark blue due to being operated by the police, plus you only ever see one of those at a time, not two flying one behind the other.
UK Wildcats do exercise a lot in Western Europe. We don't have 'Lynx' anymore. Us old pharts get told off when we refer to the 'Cats' as Lynx Mk10!!! Not forgetting the Army operate Wildcats too, and there is always the JHF or whatever it's called these days. (JHF - Joint Helicopter Force.)I can’t check, of course, but you may well be right there. Wildcat looks like Lynx 2.0, so I’m guessing they might have been at some Dutch base and were heading back to a British ship …?
Same here, they got replaced by NH90s, and in any case our Lynxes never had two-tone camouflage, so I could rule that out. But as I thought I remembered the UK also doesn’t use Lynx anymore, I was kind of puzzled what they could be. Though I was aware of the existence of Wildcat, it’s one of those things that’s too new for me to remember easilyWe don't have 'Lynx' anymore.

If memory serves it's fitted with the Rolls Royce Griffon engine not the Merlin... :thumb2:Apologies for the picture quality, these are stills from a much more satisfying video. Popped home to see Mum and Dad briefly yesterday and was treated to a private airshow. Now while the MIdlands Air show was taking place this weekend, they are a good 20 miles from Ragley Hall so this may have been a pre show practice, but was great to see this beautiful machine being thrown round the sky for 15mins. According to FlightRadar this is a MK XIX Spit, although it did not sound like the usual (amazing) Merlin engine. I'm sure someone knowledgeable will know why. Also saw the Red Arrows fly over but whilst I was driving, so no pics.
I agree Langley the Mk.XIX did use the Griffon, still sounds beautiful though :smiling4:If memory serves it's fitted with the Rolls Royce Griffon engine not the Merlin... :thumb2:
That explains it. Very similar noise, but not quite. If memory serves it's fitted with the Rolls Royce Griffon engine not the Merlin... :thumb2:
Oh I quite agree, not quite the same level as a merlin though!I agree Langley the Mk.XIX did use the Griffon, still sounds beautiful though :smiling4:
Geoff.
We had the A400 Atlas fly over us on its way to and from the Pompey flypast this morning. No pictures though, by the time I know it’s there, it’s gone :tears-of-joy:
Yep, they regularly low level over us, sometimes at night. Weirdly quieter when coming and noisier when going though….Saw the same type flying low up the Conwy Valley this morning - it flew over my head whilst I was driving out across the bridge next to Conwy castle - alas no piccy's as I was driving.
It's a big beast when seen at low level!
