Paul, Tony, I did hear it but this pic is from the net, there was too much cloud cover to see it

Tha last 2 days we’ve had what looks like a Robison R22 do a few orbits over the top of the island. Didn’t take a snap as my phone wouldn’t have been any good. Must have done a few tight turns to left/east of me and out of sight as the rotors were seriously biting into the cold air!!
Reckon it was from Bournemouth Hurn airport.

Heh, funny, I think* I saw one of those fly over here yesterday, heading more or less west. Perhaps it’s the same one ;)

* The helicopter was hard to see, just a small silhouette against the grey sky, but I think I could see the shroud around the rotor shaft, which is a pretty positive identification feature.

Two helicopters flew past today, too far to properly make out what they were even when I grabbed my binoculars. However, if I had to make a guess I’d say they were probably Lynxes, and in two-colour camouflage, which is odd because I can’t imagine who would be flying camouflaged Lynxes around here, let alone towards the sea. They were too sleek to be Pumas, but the only sleek helicopters you see around here sometimes are AW139s, but they’re dark blue due to being operated by the police, plus you only ever see one of those at a time, not two flying one behind the other.

Wildcat, has a two tone colour scheme. My usual reference for the Lynx look-a-likes is the sound, their rotor setup is very distinct. Bit like Chinooks, no-one mistakes them due to their identifying Woka-Woka sound!!!

I can’t check, of course, but you may well be right there. Wildcat looks like Lynx 2.0, so I’m guessing they might have been at some Dutch base and were heading back to a British ship …?

UK Wildcats do exercise a lot in Western Europe. We don't have 'Lynx' anymore. Us old pharts get told off when we refer to the 'Cats' as Lynx Mk10!!! Not forgetting the Army operate Wildcats too, and there is always the JHF or whatever it's called these days. (JHF - Joint Helicopter Force.)

We don't have 'Lynx' anymore.
Same here, they got replaced by NH90s, and in any case our Lynxes never had two-tone camouflage, so I could rule that out. But as I thought I remembered the UK also doesn’t use Lynx anymore, I was kind of puzzled what they could be. Though I was aware of the existence of Wildcat, it’s one of those things that’s too new for me to remember easily :)

On Friday the Typhoons out of RAF Conningsby were 'turning and burning' high over the Humber, a lot of noise from the afterburners from those tiny dots way up there!

Miko (I really miss RAF Binbrook and the daily symphony of twin Avons passing over my home)

Apologies for the picture quality, these are stills from a much more satisfying video. Popped home to see Mum and Dad briefly yesterday and was treated to a private airshow. Now while the MIdlands Air show was taking place this weekend, they are a good 20 miles from Ragley Hall so this may have been a pre show practice, but was great to see this beautiful machine being thrown round the sky for 15mins. According to FlightRadar this is a MK XIX Spit, although it did not sound like the usual (amazing) Merlin engine. I'm sure someone knowledgeable will know why. Also saw the Red Arrows fly over but whilst I was driving, so no pics.

If memory serves it's fitted with the Rolls Royce Griffon engine not the Merlin... :thumb2:

I agree Langley the Mk.XIX did use the Griffon, still sounds beautiful though :smiling4:

Geoff.

Well yesterday being a cloudless sky over Portland we had numerous puddle jumpers fly over the island, once round Portland Bill lighthouse and disappeared to the North.
Unlike today, 100% cloud cover and the only thing we saw was the Coastguard rescue helicopter, in this case a AW189. Spent a while in Westcliffe so I can only assume someone didn't obey the cliff collapse warnings!!! Hope they're ok.

That explains it. Very similar noise, but not quite.

Oh I quite agree, not quite the same level as a merlin though!

Sunday we had a T6 pass over us and today whilst walking passed Sherborne Abbey, swmbo pointed out these 2...

We had the A400 Atlas fly over us on its way to and from the Pompey flypast this morning. No pictures though, by the time I know it’s there, it’s gone :tears-of-joy:

Saw the same type flying low up the Conwy Valley this morning - it flew over my head whilst I was driving out across the bridge next to Conwy castle - alas no piccy's as I was driving.

It's a big beast when seen at low level!

Yep, they regularly low level over us, sometimes at night. Weirdly quieter when coming and noisier when going though….
