What's on the Bench 2024

Another job for my mate. It started out with him bringing this waltzer paybox (ebay picture)

And after a tiny bit of work and a gaudy splash of paint, I'm giving him this back:

Nice! That was my favourite ride as a kid……

My mate had a bit of an accident today trying to remove a hidden screw from this Zafira dashboard, breaking off a couple of the vent slats:

So I brought it home, got the micro drills, some wire and the black CA out (after being surprised that one slat was plastic, the other white metal)

Fixed, and it still adjusts like it should. I've touched it up for now but will blast some proper colour over it tomorrow. He can clean it himself!

We have a topic about using non-modelling materials in our hobby, maybe we should have one for using our bench skills to fix random items :smiling5:

In that vein: yesterday my next-door neighbour asked if I could fix his little mirror-on-a-stick, which had broken loose from said stick. Some two-part epoxy glue, that I normally use for heavy metal or resin kit parts, fixed that soon enough.

Hi guys,
After a long hibernation I'm trying to get behind the bench again, with the ambition to finish some old shelf-queens (before starting anything new!).
To boost my mojo I made some basic stuff you'll find on many benches.

I used a left-over foam tile to make an 'anti-tip-over-glue-thing'...
mb_001.jpg

It's a tight fit and works better then expected
mb_002.jpg

I also cut some cardboard strips,
mb_003.jpg

Glued them together with wood-glue,
mb_004.jpg

Added sides and a bottom,
mb_005.jpg

Finished the sides with a brown paper-tape,
mb_006.jpg

And that's an additional thing to store 'painted/ready to paint' parts - you can buy those things - but with all the cardboard in our house it made more sense to diy it.
Dimensions are 250x125x30mm (9.84x4.92x1.18")

Now I just need to finish some models : D...
Cheers Steven

I’ve now got something very similar to yours :) In my parents’ Renault Captur, some of the louvres in the dashboard didn’t open properly anymore. After a lot of trouble removing the vent from the dashboard, my father found that the pins on two had broken off, so he said to me, “You’re better with plastic than I am, can you fix them?”

The middle one is unbroken, as a reference. I filed down the remains of the breaks, built the main bits from 1 mm plastic card by copying the good one, and he then made the actual pins on his lathe from a bit of sprue I gave him. I was very happy to find that Tamiya extra-thin (well, my homebrew version of it) works on the plastic Renault used.

We hosted a party once shortly after University which got slightly out of hand and resulted in some very obvious burn marks on the bathroom floor and a melt hole on the corner of the bath. Some beige/brown speckled paintwork on the floor and some putty/sanding work on the bath, the landlord was none the wiser!

Brilliant!

I'd forgotten but that reminds me that I once fixed a fag burn in a bath, where the girls mum had fallen asleep with it propped on the side.

Thank goodness for fiberglass baths with thick gelcoat!

At least it was the bath and not the sofa!

Some very late progress shots of the M10 Achilles. Very much a WIP with the interior nearly there, but all criticism welcome. Excuse the blotches on the floor...the fixer didn't behave.

Well, I'm off the blocks with the Hobby Boss Helix. (1/48). In two minds to do a blog or not. May just post the odd pic.
I have to say though - what a difference to the LF Wasp. Nice alignment marks. Some good detail. (They have even supplied electronics boxes for the racking - unlike Mr Airfix on the Sea King!!) Everything fits nicely exactly where it should. (So far). Minimum flash and requiring only the tiniest bit of filing/sanding to eliminate sprue marks.

An hours work this morning. (The upright pieces are only resting on the base - not yet glued into position.)IMG_1573 copy.JPG

Anyone know what this is? British armour stowage? No clue what it is, so no idea what to google for colour reference.

It’s a British Army biscuit tin:

These existed in many variations of colour and print and, IIRC, a few different sizes — search for British Army WW2 biscuit tin.

Great stuff...thanks @Jakko I suspected you would know.

Cant tell from that pic but is it roughly twice as high as it is wide?
Yes Paul. Jakko has it.

Just had another " put in into the attic " never to be seen again moment. Most of the older stuff has gone, including several into the bin, once the figures had been removed. You can only keep so many dioramas .The only one in the house is the French street scene, and in the upstairs I've managed to keep those with lights in.

Well 'What's on the Bench' is quite a lot of liquid resin. Lesson learned on buying cheaper 3D printed figures. Unfortunately now outside of the returns window, and also a fume induced headache to go with.
