discussion Grades for sanding?

Evening

I am about to restock my sanding sponges. Can someone advise with the grades needed, especially how fine??

Couldn't tell you what grade/grit mine are. All i know is that they are ones used for polishing nails (cheaper than model labelled ones sometimes). I have a coarse, medium, fine and super fine.

I have anything from 120 grit right up to really fine 1200, all depends on what you are using it for, ie for a removel of a sprue edge to wanting to take back fine filler.The latter as on your plane build.

These are good for aircraft.....the finest can be used on canopies to bring back the finish......use them wet and they last for years....

Hi Bob
One thing worth remembering is that after time sanding sticks etc loose some of their coarseness. A well used coarse sander will work ok as a finer one. Files and sander also clog up and need cleaning. I use one of those wire brushes you use to brush suede shoes.

The cheapest is to buy sheets of wet and dry paper from a DIY store and glue them to an assortment of paint stiring sticks or the such.

Wet & dry, 4mm foam board, double-sided sellotape.
Grades I use are.
240, 320 400,600, 800,1200
Any size and quantity you like.
Might not be to everyone liking or thinking, work for me thought I'd just put it out there.

As others have said it depends what the purpose is. My 'proper' ones are 120/240 and 400/600. But I also use nail ones. I've even been none to cut up good old fashioned emery boards with a small modelling saw into 1 or 2mm width strips for hard to reach places.
