i will be starting my airfix SRN4 witch section should it be going in as i was going to do as ship build but i thought I would seek advice first.

You know, that’s a really interesting question.
It operates over water, but not in it, so can it be called a ship?
It doesn’t touch the ground in operation, so is it an aircraft?
It relies on downdraft from a rotary wing, so is it a helicopter?
I bet Christopher Cockrell knows.....

Personally, I'd say Civil Aircraft - they don't touch the earth/sea, and they make a helluva racket!

I’d go with aircraft — hovercraft fly. But trying to find an official classification for them is proving somewhat difficult.
The trouble is, they don’t really fly, they just hover.....a bit like a Maglev railway.....

Well for what it is worth they were insured by the Britannia P&I club who are ship insurance. I say that makes them a ship....
Well, it seems their commercial trips were called flights..........so that makes them an aircraft! Besides, they came out of the water at both ends of the trip, and could traverse land under their own power if required, not a common occurrence for a ship.
The journeys they made were called flights and the registrations were a derivation of the civil aircraft type —UK aircraft are all G - whatever , the hovercrafts were GH - so i’d say its probably classified as an aircraft , although the argument for ship is about as strong . Just put it in the Hovercraft section pete

I’d say ship, ship it to my house so I can build it.
I would love to but with airfix releasing some of their classic kits i hope this eventually gets included as the box i have was released in the early 2000s i lived in kent at that time and miss the opportunity to buy it.

I was coming home from Calais just before the hovercraft service ended, so I had to try it out. Everything was in 'aircraft' parlance, flight times etc. At the end of the flight, they even brought the hot towels around, just like they used to on long haul flights. So, to me, the crew certainly treated it as a flight.
maybe it's a 'surface effect' vehicle.... so a new category may be needed...lol
