Music while building

I got introduced to a very wide range of music in the Merchant Navy. This was in the days before the internet, videos, and CDs!. The only individual music entertainment was the cassette ( Records & rolling ships don't work ). Usually there was a pretty high end system in the bar, and with a wide range of ages & backgrounds of the officers, we were introduced to everything from classical, jazz, folk, rock'n'roll, musicals, opera, to progressive. It was etiquette to listen to other peoples' music, and for others to listen to yours ( although not without comment! ). Oddly enough,I can't remember any Heavy Metal................

Dave, you were floating in one which had its own sounds I guess which could have been music to some but creaking and clanging to others.

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,
correct - there was always the creaking ( normally the internal wood bulkheads of the cabins ) - but the main background sounds were the air-conditioning, extraction fans, the rumble of the alternators, and behind that the beat-beat-beat of the main engine. All sounds that you were used to & didn't pay attention to - until one of them stopped! ( Guaranteed to wake you from the deepest sleep )

As a follow up to the above - I had great difficulty in sleeping when I came home on leave - it was too quiet!!
For the first week or so, I'd have to have the radio on, turned down low, to give a bit of background noise!

As a help Dave I can give you an hour long recording of the noise of the building site next door.

The melodious noise of a scaffold pole falling from the 6th floor as it hits protrusions. B
Big ahhs chorus as it misses pedestrians & nursery children playing in their playground

Certain that will send you off.

I once had the winners of the the All England loudest skip delivery team contest deliver a skip to my neighbours when I was trying to sleep after a night shift…..you could try hiring skips from them Dave, I’m sure they could help…

While I do have music on as I have said normally I work with out. Can't stand the drivel from the radio, by this I mean the presenter and adverts if on commercial. Most of my collection is on vinal and I would be loath to have it set up in the cave, and much prefer the sound from a record to a cd.

Phew and there I was thinking you were younger than me John.

Agree John radio drivel. Used to listen to 8:00am news with all the presenters giving out the facts.
Now it is all opinion, mostly not mine. Jumping to conclusions with out studying the facts.

We are showing our ages - a lot of 1970's stuff. i hold my hands up and agree - I mostly listen to 70's and 80's, the last being Rick Wakeman' Journey to the Centre of the Earth, before that it was Dire Strait's Brothers in Arms.

Quite often I listen to audio books- the Stephen Fry books on Greek mythology are very entertaining.

Peter

ps - if you get a chance to see his live show version, it is well worth seeing.

Ah Rick Wakeman.

Superb composer superb on keyboard.

Listen to this

It is soft in places, hope, & the hardness of life, disasters.

A superlative composition with a touch of piano keyboard that few have.
Able with his playing to convey each mood in his expressive dynamic way.

Not sure if anyone is a fan, but Gary Numan's newish albums Savage and Intruder are locked into the digital player. Savage (Songs from a Broken World) is getting my full marks and up there with some amazing albums like (Paul Simon) Graceland and (Pixes) Doolittle.
Give it a listen :smiling3:

To be honest Alexander, I didn’t know Gary Numan was still recording. I haven’t heard him since his Tubeway army days……. Personally I think Gracelands is one of “The“ great albums, especially “Diamonds on the sole of her shoes” and “Under African skies”, so I’ll give it a listen. Thanks for the recommendation.

This afternoon whilst sat at my bench (yes i actually got some bench time ), i have been listening to a new band for me. A Welsh band called Dream State. Well impressed.

For modelling, quiet reigns, but in the car background 'noise' is a must & the radio is full of blather, so have a 6 CD 'head', backed up with a 32gb SD card (not yet full - the contents are wide and varied, ZZ Top, Vivaldi, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, The Hamsters, Hayseed Dixie, Tanika Tikaram, The Waterboys, Simon and Garfunkel, through to Rolf Harris's 'hits cassette' (it might not be 'PC' to have his music playing loudly, but he recorded some Australian folk music back in the day), to name some of the artists/tracks)
Must admit that working in the theatre, I'm getting exposed to different groups - especially the support acts, some of which are (to me, anyway) better than the main act! Also, the number of acts that are 'still going' is really surprising - had 'The Waterboys' performing the other week, got Tony Blackburn coming with a show soon - some of the old groups might only have one or even none of the original members though (work out the ages of members of groups like 'The Searchers', 'Marmalade', or 'Jerry and the Pacemakers' - all are still touring!)
Oh, forgot that we've got good old Englebert Humperdinck coming in the next month or so

I ALWAYS listen to music while at the hobby bench. Currently listening to this - it does require regular stops to get up and jig about a bit - VERY danceable!

I just hit random and some tunes catch my ear and other not so much, Floyd, queen springsteen and just about everything in between except for the s+++ kicking stuff

Just silence interrupted by swearing, If I listen to anything it would be JJ CALE .

If you listen to Spotify for a while, it generates a 'daily mix', which includes your favourites, but also other artists of a similar genre, which can be good...............or bad, I've listened for over 5 hours at a time ( not all at the workbench ), and can't recall hearing a replay ( or my short term memory is fading )
