I'm genuinely interested in what people do with their models after completing them.

I've made 6 so far since staring the hobby this year and they are mostly 1/72 scale with a single 1/35 one.

They are currently stored in a bookshelf but that isn't going to go on much longer as they're are also loads of books on them.

Many people here make loads more models than that, make much larger scale ones and have been making them for years. Surely you don't all have enormous houses with unlimited storage space so what becomes of all these models?

I don't display them, so once photographed, they are shoved in boxes and go up in the loft, never to see the light of day ever again.

When I snuff it, I see this as one way of getting back at my two sons for 'Helping' them through their teenage years. "Sort that lot out, boys!"

The hobby is building and painting the things, once that's done all that's left to do is look at them, which you can't do while building and painting......
I suppose being brought up a "pad brat" and getting used to minimising my stuff every few years when moving that deciding to get rid of things is pretty easy.
(Though I can horde stuff too.)

I tend to build 1/32 scale aircraft usually, though I am currently building a run of 1/48 mainly twin and four engined aircraft. Consequently my built models do take up a lot of space.

I have a dedicated modelling room in which I have had shelves put up that are 18inches deep to accommodate me at of my 1/32 aircraft. When my shelves get full I do a cull of my models. Some I have given away to children, others are in a museum while those I am ‘less pleased with’ end up in the bin. Bear in mind that it’s the building, painting and weathering I enjoy not so much displaying them.

The picture is of some of my 1/32 builds that are in a shelf over my workbench.

Oh, on the subject of space I have a Hobbyboss 1/32 B24 Liberator to build with a 42 inch wingspan and a 1/32 Border Lancaster and you don’t get much bigger than those. I will find a way!!

See that there is the fatal flaw in your plan :tongue-out2:

Well Mike, I think Alan knows me too well. I rarely finish anything either and therefore, I have no probs trying to display them!!!

I’m looking at building more shelves the dust it my issue all that TLC has to go somewhere

couple of display cabinets on the wall in the mancave has some stuff in it........got them on ebay but they are a bit narrow....plan is to get another to fill a gap on the wall

big stuff is in plastic storage boxes to keep them dust free, stored under the bed

i want a display cabinet in the front room but cant find one i like for the right price......not struck on the ikea ones

I have these but as I tend to do bases for them all they fill up quickly compared with just the kit itself. I do have a cull now and then by stripping off anything useful and then use what's left for practicing techniques on.

I have only been back to modelling for a couple of years so not a lot of stuff to store but space is getting scarce. I do have about 6 in individual cases but the rest are filling up the room. As building and painting is what does it for me then perhaps some will be given away and some will probably end up in the bin.

I've sold a few on ebay, but packing them is a bit of a pain.

I've some room to display in the cave, others unfortunately get boxed up and go into the attic.

I’m been facing the same dilemma of what to do with them too. I’ve got a display cabinet but it’s now reaching capacity.
I have a nephew who am going to give some to and probably bin a few of the lesser ones to make room for new stuff.

Interesting responses everyone. Thanks.

I agree that the making is the fun part so having them in display isn't as important but some of the models I've seen made since during this site seem way too good to be boxed up and stored away. But I guess that's life and I'll be there one day.

As for binning models, I could do this. I have binned one I made a complete mess of and never completed but I'd struggle to bin a complete one. Then again, I guess my daughters or someone else will do that one day when I'm gone.

For now I'm going to search tor more storage space.

If anyone knows where I can get a decent wall cabinet that is at least 8 inches deep I’d be very interested :tongue-out3:
The shallow ones I have don’t hold tank or aircraft models, just figures……the just aren’t deep enough.
