Thread owner
Well heres the aircraft finished , aerial and pitot fitted , bombs and prop attached and some mucky stains applied to the floats . The rest of the airframe is being left clean as these aircraft didnt get a hard life .Its now all ready to go onto the catapult , once the catapult goes onto the submarine , cheers tony01B9BC29-5AF9-480B-8274-D3539BFE08F0.jpeg99A78A87-53A8-4CED-9F70-5EAF82D50B23.jpeg50E01182-458F-498B-867E-050518B8C7EC.jpegE761802B-7CCA-4075-B7E2-2EE4816A21D6.jpegA11198D8-26CB-43DA-9940-46EFFDF4EEEA.jpeg88384265-7A0B-4246-B693-7DBB5B7A4B58.jpeg3EEF16A4-791E-4F3E-86F7-50ABF636CA1E.jpeg9CD2755A-FB6A-4269-9C61-4F6B8B02857A.jpeg

Got the main part of the planking done and stuck on. Theres another 2 strips to be added either side of the hangar/ conning tower. Ive cut out a slot at the starboard side of the hangar where the folding crane is stowed , not decided yet whether im going to have it deployed or stowed in the slot , either way ive got to make it first ! Ive given the joint between the conning tower and hangar a bit of filler ( poundland instant nails , smoothed off with a wet finger ) to blend the join , it probably needs a bit more but we’ll see. 84A4C6D9-D9C3-4EB3-849D-80D784322E88.jpeg51023540-DC9D-4246-BE93-5AAA53D884A6.jpeg7565C5B2-CD59-4A43-8A09-57DDB69E2A7D.jpeg

Tony, you Just don't know how excited I am!!! I was just kidding about the sub, but then you just go crazy and scratch one!!! My gawd man, that is just too cool and looks so damn good. Then you go and finish the wing thingy and that is gorgeous too!!! This is an epic masterpiece in the making Sir!!! And you're right, it will be unsinkable to boot........

Prost
Allen, still wiping the drool up............

Thanks allen , youre right about going a bit crazy - at first I only thought about making a base about the same length as the catapult then it just sort of got out of control and here we are , virtually half a 1/72 sub ! Wait till you see the cunning plan for the guard rails !

Given the main base a coat of white emulsion to seal and stabilise it . Once this has dried it will get a light sanding then more coats till it gets smooth . C0BB1C68-06DE-402C-B0BF-36FEA2B90B06.jpeg

Well this ones been slowly progressing in the background . The original hangar/ conning tower section was a nightmare trying to get smooth and eventually I just decided to bin it and make a new one ,so this has been painted , sanded , smoothed, repeat ,repeat etc till eventually its something like ready . After looking at various pictures of japanese subs( and there arent that many !) the hangar seems to have rows of rivets so how to make these ? I came up with the idea of marking the rivet positions with tape then piercing the surface with a point . Once I had done this it was out with the cosmetic and beauty products again . This time it was the nail art ‘caviar’ balls - tiny round balls intended to be stuck onto nails . These come in various colours , in this case I used black . Each hole had a dot of pva glue then an individual ball placed on . Once its painted it should give the effect of half round rivets.
The maim deck of the sub has also been sanded / filled/ painted etc and finally had a coat of black primer. SWMBO has to see this as she thinks I'm weird looking in any shop department for things that can be used in modelling. Great idea Tony

My word that's looking good Tony .Pity you had a scrap the first tower, did you use the same material the second times as well ?

The second one was the same pink stuff as the hull john , the yellow foam I used for the first one was just too soft , more like florists oasis - you only had to look at it and it marked !

I was thinking that when I asked what you were using to seal it at first fearing that it looked soft. Should be better now with harder foam.

Cheers,

Great work Tony. A perfect example of how non modelling stuff can be used to great effect. Your method of placing the rivets accurately certainly works better than trying to draw lines.
