Anyone wanting an accurate 1/72 Helldiver would be better off starting with the Academy kit, but I was asked by Airfix Model World magazine to build this, the old Airfix kit. All the rivets were sanded off, a cockpit interior scratch built, the model was re-scribed and vac-form canopies used. I also cut and dropped the leading edge slats, as this happened when the undercarriage was down.

Impressive!! :D

I can throw a dictionary at you........but that is simply, impressive!

Wow - that's great. Such a lot of work to improve this old kit, but now it looks simply fantastic.

As all have said very nice Mike. Crisp as a crisp. You do get through them.

Another unbelievable masterpiece in 1/72. The detail in this scale is breath taking.

Great stuff

Superb skills Mike , you wouldnt think it was a 47 year old moulding!! Ive always had a soft spot for the old Airfix Helldiver as it was one of the first kits i was allowed to have a go at myself as a nipper. I vaguely recall it being very blue (the plastic) and having lots of windows to get gluey fingerprints all over but i loved it . I keep saying I must do it again but I think the Academy one is looking more attractive these days!! Great job , cheers tony

What is that circular object in the back position? It is clearer in the last two pictures, is it some kind of armour plating for the bomb aimer? It looks tremendous and if you hadn't said it was 1/72 no way would I have believed that, looks as detailed as a really good 1/48.

Cheers Neil, it's the circular gun-mount (the gun's in the stowed position on the model i.e. pointing into the rear fuselage).
