Hi all;

It's been a while since I added to my project of modeling all of 41(F) Sqn's aircraft in 1/48 - I've had a brief diversion into building motorbikes! So, I thought I'd better get on with it - here is the latest. This is a bit of a kit-bash between the new Trumpeter DH Hornet F1 and the Classic Airframes F1/F3. There's been the inevitable verbal destruction of the Trumpeter kit on various forums, but it really isn't that bad. The main issue I had was the control surfaces - they are moulded as fabric covered, whereas the Hornet had solid surfaces; not only that, but the fabric effect has been way over-done, to the extent that it looks like saggy sail-cloth. The kit is boxed as an F1, but there are parts in it to do a Sea Hornet and the night-fighter - future boxings, I guess. There are also some of the parts to do an F3 - the fin with fillet is there, but not the completely different horizontal stabilisers; very odd. So, I robbed the F3 stabilisers from my old and broken Classic Airframes model - they fitted pretty well, with just a bit of filler. I also used the CA rocket rails and some of the cockpit resin. The 60lb rockets are Flightpath white metal. Decals from Hannants new decal sheet for the Hornet, thankfully they printed 41(F) markings! So, here she is as a 41(F) Sqn machine based at Church Fenton in 1950:

Excellent build Andy.Ive always liked the Hornet and will be getting one of the Trumpeter kits myself.The people that moan about Trumpeters accuracy should be happy they are producing these kits.What other main stream manufacturer would kit a Hornet,Whirlwind,Attacker or Spiteful in 1/48 ?.

Too right Dave. Does it look like a Hornet? Yes it does - good enough for me!

That is a great build and the paint job is top$

Superb job Andy, the quality of the build is top class, and fantastic work with correcting the errors. Its a beautiful aircraft , the pinnacle of piston engined development , I love it. Great build and a worthy addition to the 41sqn ranks !! , cheers tony

Looks great. Really nice finish on the paint.

Beautiful. Judging from the snide remarks about the kit on certain other forums, I assumed it was a horrible mess - your assessment seems much more considered, and the result shows it can be built into a superb model.
