At what point does a "Stash" get out of hand?
When I got back into the hobby, I bought myself some cheapo kits to get going and experiment with, this was my original "stash"....
Eg: seven kits....
Kits dec24.webp

But my stash has grown, and keeps on growing!
I now (currently) have these....
Model stash 28Nov25 (1).webp

Model stash 28Nov25 (2).webp

Model stash 28Nov25 (3).webp
EG: easily 50+
Plus a couple of others floating around, plus a couple ordered and on their way, Lol.
Now I know, that there will be members on here who have even bigger stashes.

So, I ask again, at what point does your stash become too big?
Or is it like many other hobbies, eg: fishing, camping, motorbikes, sheds, tools, etc, EG: the ideal number of model kits = 1+n

My stash is a bit bigger and I regret buying about 25% of my kits. In the beginning I made it a sport getting cheap kits - I now fully understand that cheap kits most of the time require extra work/time. As I'm working full time, that extra time is a major problem, so now I prefer paying a bit extra for a decent kit/brand that goes together well.

The other problem is I get inspired very quickly, so a documentary or movie makes me want to make a model of about everything, resulting in new projects and kits...

I do like to go through my stash and think of all the finished projects lol

Yeah, last year I bought two small auction lots, each lot had several kits in it, I bought them just cos they were cheap and ended up with a load of older kits, mostly planes, which are not my favorites TBH!

As I've said before in similar topics, I don't have a stash as I can't see the point. I buy kits because I want to build them (or rather, paint them) so if I had loads I'd have to rush through the pile to get them all done.
I do have a couple that I've bought and lost interest in, but generally I'll buy as and when I'm ready for the next project.

That being said, I've nothing against those that like to collect kits, it just isn't for me.

I blame the series production of many manufacturers. They launch a new model with a ridiculous low production run. so they don't end with a large surplus if they dont sell. So if you are not quick you miss out. That's my excuse for the five various versions of the Scammell trucks, one build four in the stash...
I have not long ago purchased two of the new Buccaneers from Airfix despite still having one of the originals in the stash (and one built). lol

Then there are "Oh! Squirrel!" moments. You go looking for one particular thing and see something totally unexpected that you 'have' to own..

Its the finished builds I have a problem with, as all of mine are dios and a size, into the loft they go. Good luck to my family when they go up there. Have a large stash still in the bedroom, a lot of half used boxs of figures and a load of armour I bought from John way back 6 or more years ago. Now being gifted more which I shall build.

That's probably the best way to be - If I had my time again I'd do the same. As it is I have about 100 kits in the stash which is far too many.

The plan is currently to sell a few off or at least donate them to 'Models for Heroes'.

My "stash" is what I've just received. I start on it right away. Sometimes I finish it, but mostly I get it to a point and set it aside for further study. I prolly have 15 WWII Jeeps basically assembled & painted awaiting a decision as to final configuration (crews, decals, radios, MGs, CITB) defined by their unit assignment.

I keep a list of my stash and its cost and currently have over £1000 in kits, a lot of them are on the expensive side that I purchased before I realized that my skill level wasn't as high as needed to give the model its true worth.

That raises an interesting point. I have LOADS of unfinished kits - ranging from those with missing/damaged parts, those with paint/decal problems and those I've simply lost interest in. I build kits to occupy my spare time. Does it really matter if a kit remains unfinished as long as I've enjoyed whatever effort I've put into it? Economically, my entertainment costs far less building a kit rather than going to the pub - especially when you subtract the unpleasant hours recovering from a hangover!

Thats what the wife used to say...... I dont smoke, dont drink so dont go in the pub, dont gamble so dont go in the bookies, hate football so dont disapeer every saturday...... She said she couldnt whinge about what i spent on models cos i wasnt 'wasting it'

Ive had a count up

Current stash is 33..........but i do have a stash in storage which is about 250........i can remember when it was about 400  but i did slim it down years ago lol

I once knew a guy on a forum in the states..... He was more collector than builder...... When he moved he had a van and a uhaul trailer to move the stash and it still took him two trips! I remember the photos lol
