discussion Best material for MP40 leather rifle strap at 1:16 scale?

Hi, currently progressing with my German Elite Infantryman in 1:16 scale and I need to add a nice brown leather strap to the MG (MP40) he is holding. At least the box art seems to indicate it is brown leather...
When doing smaller 1:35 scale I tend to just use thin Tamiya type masking tape, cut into thin strips, stuck on and painted, but thought maybe there may be something better or more appropriate for this larger scale, if so, what?

Not got any pewter foil, but myabe folded thin tinfoil may work?

Rubber bands in hindsight might be too thick. How about electrical or plumbing tape, which is saggy naturally?
