Hi, currently progressing with my German Elite Infantryman in 1:16 scale and I need to add a nice brown leather strap to the MG (MP40) he is holding. At least the box art seems to indicate it is brown leather...
When doing smaller 1:35 scale I tend to just use thin Tamiya type masking tape, cut into thin strips, stuck on and painted, but thought maybe there may be something better or more appropriate for this larger scale, if so, what?
Cheers for any info you can pass on.....

How about ordinary decorators masking tape. Two pieces, sticky side to sticky side and cut the width you want. That tape has a texture which might paint up to look like leather.

Masking tape or pewter (as Scottie or Jim suggest) would be my go to as well. It needs to be easy to manipulate, easy to work, and stay in position once made. Painted copier or watercolour paper would also fit the bill…..

Ended up just using some thin Tamiya masking tape, painted up red leather brown, CA'd into place, gave it a little twist to sort of show it drooping, not perfect by any means, but it adds that little bit of extra realism to the figure. Thanx for the suggestions folks....
