BoB Group Build - Andrew's 1/72 Airfix Spitfire and 109 'Dogfight Doubles'

Thread owner
Hi all

So this is very nearly across the finish line. Below are a few progress pics of the base and Airfix sign.

As I said at the start I wanted to do something with it, rather than leave it as a black lump. So I tried, stress tried, to get a vague sky effect, as follows:
  • Base coat Halfords grey rattle can primer;
  • A very heavy misting of vallejo grey primer;
  • A very heavy misting of Vallejo RLM 65 Hellblau;
  • A lighter misting of Vallejo RAF Azure Blue. In hindsight I should have used this as the main basecoat and then done the RLM 65 over that but forgot I had it.
  • A light misting of 50/50 RLM 65 and RAF insignia white.
  • A few light streaks of white to represent light cloud. They're more visible from a lower angle, so don't really come out it in the picture.
  • The base is probably a bit darker than it has come out in the photo.

The Airfix badge was more challenging than I thought it would be and I've lost count how many times I found myself touching one colour where I caught it with another one. So for better or worse I'm calling it done as from a normal viewing distance the very small imperfections won't be visible.

ACW.

Andrew

Nice job Andrew.
Number One Rule.....Never look at your finished painted stuff closer than it should naturally be viewed. Padded cells will be your friend! ;)

Indeed Ron. The trouble is I need an optivisor to see the small stuff......

In all seriousness though I have actually recently started to take a literal step back from what I'm working on and view it from a sensible distance, for that very reason!

Hi all

So these are done other than the aerial wire.

They were given a wash of my homebrew off black mixture. The 109 was given a light coat that just toned the fresh paint look. The Spitfire was less successful than the 109 wash but Junior likes the effect, so what can I say. I have some proper washes on my Wishlist with John.

The canopy on the Spit came out really well. The 109 less so but the poor moulding and flexibility really didn't help given my novice skills.

That said I'm pleased overall given that these are first attempts at doing a serious effort planes. You've got to start somewhere!

The next time you see them they will be mounted on the base!

ACW as usual.

Andrew

Nicely done!

Looking forward to seeing them 'dog fighting' on that stand.

Very nice work indeed Andrew. A lovely finish on both.
Thanks Peter.

Although if you look really closely you can see the imperfections in the Spitfire camo. But at least in know what I did wrong!

Andrew, nothing amiss with either of those, think we're all guilty of finding faults with out work . Look at photos we see from model shows, all taken from a couple of ft away , so so we worry , no .
