Looking at the PE work on this, you have done this befor! lol
About that rudder you purchased. I have been looking around the interweb, like you do, trying to see if there are other options. This raised one big question in my mind. The guy that made that 3D print you have. I'm wondering where he got the details from.
Looking at the 1/10 scale model at the Kure Naval Museum the rudder in the kit looks very like the one in the museum. No I am not an expert but I am thinking that the Kure Museum model, is as close as you can get to the real thing. Suddenly I am glad that I did not just order one. I was very close I can tell you. I am all for improvements to a model and have spent a minor fortune on things that correct, alter and improve a build. So I always have a dig around to find out if it really needs a change, or someone is pushing things out "because it looks better" Don't miss understand no way a dig at you and your excellent work so far. It's purely a heads up to the fact that the kits rudder might not be to bad after all.
I have copies of the pictures if you would like to see them.

There are several 1/200 trumpeter builds on you tube this is the one that brought it to my attention https://www.youtube.com/@OzScalemodeling but if your happy with the original rudder that's all good

I just sanded and shaped the rudders instead of spending the needed cash on the "right" ones.

He has a lot of reference books on the Yamato

This is from where i bought it
This pair of models represents the two rudders of Imperial Japanese Navy battleships Yamato and Musashi, and aircraft carrier Shinano.
The models' overall shape and dimensions match scaled drawings published in the 2017 edition of "Anatomy of the Ship: Battleships Yamato and Musashi" by Janusz Skulski and Stefan Draminski. The shell plating and screwhead pattern detail are consistent with Janusz Skulski's line drawings and the real Musashi rudder as it appears in modern video and photos of the wreck published by Paul G. Allen in 2015.

Features:

  • accurate size and shape
  • accurate shell plating configuration
  • complete screwhead detail
  • zinc anode detail

Hi again Brian I have now found the drawings that you referred to, turned out a friend has the self same book small world.
So now I have three options, leave it as is, reshape it or replace it.
I think I know how this ends.

Funny that the museum model is wrong though. Just goes to show you can never be sure.

I think I know how this ends.
A lot of people seem to reshape the original, tbh if I knew about it I would of considered it myself. I think the museum build was completed before the new info was discovered.

Brian just had a read through from the start as missed this some how .
Most impressive work and very neat . PE , say no more ,must be very satisfying to do something that small and well .
