Here’s another one of my painting projects, keeping the fear at bay...

I picked this up at the BMSS Nationals and it was little bit of a gamble because like a total idiot I had forgotten my glasses- yes , at a model show!
DOH!
I didn’t know anything about the City of London Yeomanry uniform, the fact that it was a Sid Horton sculpt was enough for me; and it hardly broke the bank anyway.
When I finally got to look at it in focus at home I was pleasantly surprised at what a clean sculpt it is. I do like Sid’s faces, they really capture the character of these subjects.
As always I paint the face first ,and I was so pleased with myself that I photographed it, so that if I messed it up later I would at least have a record of it.

As for the rest of him, the uniform is a delightfully unusual combination of light blue grey with purple facings, of which I found as many conflicting shades as I found illustrations. The only photographic image I could find is of the modern day regimental band, but the uniform is much darker than all but one of the references; so I went with something in between, which I like and I don’t really care if it’s not correct. In actual fact it’s a WW2 RAF colour- PRU Blue, which was the colour of Photo Reconnaissance Unit Spitfires. And for the purple facings I went with Vallejo Violet Red, both of which colours I already had .
His plume is also bright light blue, so a very colourful figure for the cabinet.

I enjoyed painting this figure and I'm quite happy with the outcome, but I made a few rookie mistakes in assembling it completely, as some areas were quite inaccessible when it came to painting.
I also think I may have attached the right arm in the wrong position as the feathers don’t sit right .
Next time I may not be in such a hurry.
Still onwards and upwards and maybe I’ll get back to that Normandy water....

We are our own worst critics. I think he looks great. If I had the talent to paint as well as that I would be more than happy.
