Good evening all

And so after the last minute problems with canopy, I have decided to call this build finished and in doing so achieved four firsts:
  • My first Mustang....I'll let that sink in......
  • In fact my first US plane since coming back to the hobby and possibly ever!

  • My first all metal finish
  • My first South Korean Air Force plane
If you have been following the build you may recall that this is one of the first 10 F-51s the US supplied to the South Korean Air Force in the very early days of the Korean war. If you want to know more then you can do worse than read these. There's about an hour's worth of reading on the background to Mustangs in Korea:

Details on the kit/paints as follows:
  • Kit: Airfix 1:72 North American F-51D Mustang A02047A
  • Decals: Kit decals
  • Paints: Vallejo Metal Colour and Model Air and possibly some Revell and/or Humbrol on the pilot.
  • Weathering: Flory wash (dark and light dirt) and Vallejo game wash for the exhaust stains.

The only issue and I had been warned about it, was one of the undercarriage legs was bent out of shape - apparently it's a very common issue with this kit.

As you know I was aiming for a muted metallic finish as per an image of the actual plane, rather than a nice shiny metal one as you often see. On the whole I'm pleased with how it's turned, albeit I think I could have been slightly more aggressive with my approach.

Oh and I enjoyed it so much I've just ordered another one.

ACW as usual.

All the best.

Andrew

Wow what a response! Thanks vey much guys for the support and comments. As always, I'm genuinely humbled given the quality of the builds you put out.

As I said in the build blog, I could have been a bit more aggressive in the muted metal finish. I'll certainly have another go at such a finish next time I do the kit. From what I've seen in my research there were certainly no nice and "shiny" Mustangs in any of the pics. Also many of the pics I saw of the impromptu airfields they operated from were on the 'austere' side to say the least and from what I've read these planes were worked very hard, so I'll try and reflect that even better next time.

Thanks again chaps.

Cracking result Andrew :D

I think you’ve captured the worn look of the natural metal finish very well.

Geoff.

Great job andrew , the faded natural metal looks perfect ,cheers tony
