Heres my kit for the large model build. Its the ancient Airfix 1/24 Spitfire.I will be doing it in the kit supplied scheme. The decal sheet is quite good and is really the best part of the kit.Ive ordered an 'Airscale' instrument decal set for the cockpit and some 'Master' turned brass 20mm cannon barrels for the wings.Plus 'Gern' very kindly sent me a PE Sutton harness for this build. All I've done so far is turn the end opening box into a tray to make things easier.Promise I won't start the kit until 1st Jan!.View attachment 208472

Nice one Dave!

I'm sure that with your ideas and your habitual hard work, this plane will be a great build ;)

Ps: Thank for join in :)

I'm sure you will do a great job Dave.

Hello Dave, we're on the same boat, I'm building the same kit.

How is the quality of your kit? Do you have flash and incomplete pieces?

Nice show of aftermarket, I should think about buying some.

Quality is ok.A little flash. My fuselage halves are twisted.Hopefully I will be able to get them straight when I glue them together without having to do any 'Surgery'.I think the after market items I have bought are all there is for this kit.Apart from canopy masks that is.I hope to start it this evening.

Made a start on this yesterday.Every part has flash ,mould seams or ejector pin marks. Some parts have all three!.So I've spent a lot of time just cleaning up parts. The instrument panel is very thick. So I've thinned it a bit with a file. Then I noticed what I thought were raised circles representing instruments on the front of the instrument panel. These turned out to be ejector pin marks!.So they had to be removed. Then I fixed the after market instrument panel to a piece of plastic card, then to the back of the instrument panel.Lightening holes in cockpit bulkheads are too small. So I've enlarged them with a drill.View attachment 208997

Don't know about glue, but I've got a tube of Squadron green for it !.

Nice start Dave!

I love this SSIG....we can see the different forms or build habits over the similar planes at the same time!!

Fantastic :)

Nice, tidy start Dave, but I see you've had to dig out the heavy duty grinder for it!

Yes.The last time I used it was when I built a vacform a few years ago.

The cockpit is a bit short on detail. So I decided to have a go at scratch building a few bits and pieces.Ive added some wire and bits of plastic to the left fuselage half.Should look ok when I've painted them.Once ive glued the instrument panel in,I will add some cables to the throttle quadrant and route them forward through one of the lightning holes in the panel. The black circle behind and below the throttle represents the elevator trim wheel. If the control cables to it were uncovered I will need to add them.I don't normally do scratch building.Im quite enjoying it.Im still not happy with the instrument panel.I may add some knobs and switches to it if I can make them.

The Airfix instructions say to paint the seat black and the armour plate its mounted on gunmetal. All the photos I've seen show the plate in interior green and the seat in the mk5 as the plastic type.So I've painted them accordingly.I used Tamiya 'Hull red' For the seat.I also enlarged the holes in the flare stowage on the front of the seat as they were too small.

I'm using that site for the cockpit details.I printed some of the pics off as it's easier than looking on the computer all the time. Thanks anyway Steve.Un fortunately there are no pics of the Elevator trim wheel area.So I will have to look elsewhere for that info.Airfix have also moulded a smaller round blob below that. Not sure if it's another trim wheel (rudder?) or an injector pin mark!.I really need to get the pilots notes for the spitfire.Ive got them for the Hurricane and Stirling and they show everything in the cockpit .
