Prob 50 yrs since i badly constructed airfix kits, and now in 3 month lockdown its time to keep occupied.my 1st questions are..
Where(online) do you buy your airplane kits?
Also which are the better manufacturers(Tamiya/Airfix etc).
Also the best glues/paints etc.
I'm not into competition standard atm so just basic advice for now.
Thanks in advance

Welcome Gary, for online purchases you could start with the ScaleModelShop here on the site. Funny thing is many of us tend to online the far reaches from where we are. With the lockdown I fear there wiil be delays. On manufacturers it depends on your preference of tolerence and how far you want to go with the kit. The one that goes together easy with not much hassle is of course Tamiya...the whole wallet goes with it too...burnt to crisp. The new Airfix offerings are not bad too. The following don't give you too uch headache...
Brands: Tamiya, Hasegawa, Trumpeter, Italeri, Airfix, Academy, AFV, ICM, Eduard, Revell, Hobby Boss and Zvezda.

Glues...you have thick, medium, extra thin and extra extra evaporates in front of your eyes thin. I still use the thick for large assemblies and the extra thin for small items like antenna, cockpit instruments and with a pointed brush any seams that's not glued down.
Brands: Tamiya, Gunze or Mr Cement, Humbrol, ABS, Revell, Deluxe...

We don't compete here but get inspiration when a gem comes up. What is great is we actually see progress in the members skills. Hope you enjoy your rekindled interest. The guys will shortly come in with their advice...probably all taking the advantage of the lockdown for bench time before SWMBO pinches the ear and demands for chores to be done.:tears-of-joy:

Cheers,
Richard

Gary,
welcome to the forum!
What's your interest? What Scale ? What's your budget? - 3 questions that dictate recommendations!
I'm afraid with the present circumstances mail order may be your only source - John at SMS is always good service, plus you get your 5%
discount!
There are a large spread of skills here, from absolute beginners, through returnees to competition prize standard.
With the increase in the number of models, paints, glues & associated techniques over the past decade, it can be difficult to keep up, so asking questions on here is a good way to get information, sharing thoughts about models etc can change your mind about your next purchase. The build blogs here are pretty honest - if something's wrong it's highlighted ( unlike some other forums! ), and if it's good, equally praised.
Keep Safe
Dave

I might have missed it, but where you from Gary? No good recommending UK suppliers if you're living in Australia!

Meantime, it's always worth checking ebay (do watch the feedback though!). Even if you're not sure about buying from non-dealers, at least you'll have an idea of what's available - as Dave says, we're rather spoiled for choice these days!

And a big welcome from Germany too! Not a wing thingy builder myself, but the guys have started you off in the right direction. Just remember to have fun…......

Hi Gary
Welcome aboard. As a starter I think you can’t go wrong with the Tamiya 1/48 single engined fighters. They are reasonably priced, well engineered, and fit together exceptionally well. I wouldn’t try any of the so called started kits around, they tend to be repackaged older moulds.

I can't find a phone number for the SMS shop on this site,i don't want to order the wrong glues, paints etc.

Hello Gary,
All good advice above. One thing I would add is beware of older kits. They might just turn you off. Before you buy anything, search for online reviews, then make your mind up.

Just click on the banner at the top of the start page to this forum, which is owned by the owner of the shop.
He has every thing you need and then some. Please note there is no physical shop. Internet only.
