I have done a pin wash and then sprayed a matt varnish so I am ready for more weathering and OD really does weather!

I have painted the 13 gun barrels

These will be among the last of the final fittings to be attached.

There really is very little to write about with this kit, no dramas at all. Fit decent but not perfect, nice but not great engineering. All in all it fits that gap between Tamiya’s engineering and fit perfection and a poor to mediocre fitting kit.

When it comes to weathering I have Googled to find photos to act as a guide. Clear photos of the actual aircraft showing weathering patterns are not as easy to find as I thought they would be.

I have this selection to work from

I have sprayed two of MRP’s clear colours, Exhaust Soot and Smoke.

The smoke looks a little glossy while the other is very flat. I am thinking g that I need to Matt down the Smoke a little.

Matting it down will help tone it down a little. I think I will use a semi matt to give texture contrast to the rest of the wing.

Wow Barry, I love it, it's perfect, subtle enough to give a contrast but not overdone as if it's 'sat in a field' for years, you're really turning out a beauty here..

Looking really good. Chris is right regarding the weathering. Certainly sounds as if HKM have done a fine job with this kit.

More weathering work done.

You can see below how a semi matt have taken out the shine from the smoke improving its appearance.

I have also done some additional dirt and kerosene streaking.

The underside has also had more work. Additional oil and dirt streaking mainly. But I also applied AK exhaust wash over the superchargers. This effect depends on the base it is applied over and that’s all to the better AC94487E-1B36-4349-B9B3-4DC36659BA7E.jpeg

Maybe I'm late, but here are some of the reference pics of B17s I collected browsing through the web.
I hope they could still be of some use.

Nice work Barry. It’s starting to come together well. Interesting that the shots posted by Andy show the exhaust trails to be uneven, especially the one from the starboard outer. Must be due to prop wash?

Thanks Andy. What I find interesting is how different the patterns of weathering are between those you found and I found. It’s too late to change the model to those off set patterns of course but very interesting. Thanks again.

Don't want to be the bearer of bad new Barry but the staining of the 8 wing vents is wrong. Not exhaust fumes came out of the holes there. The staining goes either side of the openings

Neil, there is a video |I've seen showing the actual impact. Very sad. I dread to think how the bomb aimer felt watching it all happen......

Alan, I see what you mean but what I did is as per one of my photos, the third one down that I posted.

Well the wings are on, no cement needed.

As you can see I have also removed all the masking. Final lap now

I do a completed thread soon.
