I quit! Smoking that is.

WELL Ian i was smoking 60 no6 fags a day back in the 70 's but came 1980 an fags hit a pound a pack for 20 i said i might as well roll up a pound note in me mouth an light it up so i quit but not easy but how i did it was no fags before breakie an then a little bit later on say a month then i dint have a fag till my tea break at work at 10 am then bit later none till after 12pm an then only one at 3pm an like that till my system dint want more nicatine in fact to me now it smells like cats pee as i noticed last wk when some freinds came over an they lit up an boy im glad we were sitting in chairs out in the sun as i jen wont let them smoke indoors an we went to see a boaty m8 not long ago an boy talk about pong his ceiling in his livin room was brown an when we came home we still had the pong on us as we both had a bath an changed our clothes boy oh boy dont know how i smoked what i did an the pong just dint notice it then

Well done Ian. I quit decades ago and with the savings i bought a CBR600 :)

Yes it takes a few months to get the old lungs working on oxygen properly but you'll defo feel better for it in the long run.

Congrats Ian...and I won't offer a Cigar by way of celebration! ;) Like Dave W., I also cold turkeyed my way out of the habit.....that was in '76 and I never looked back....again, "Well Done"! :thumb2:Rick H.

Nice one Ian , Its not going to be easy but the benefits ( health and financial ) are well worth it . Stay strong , cheers tony ( packed it in 25 yrs ago , never looked back , dont miss it at all)

The reason I stopped was: I had been rushed into hospital with blood poisoning & while I was there, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Ten days later, the day before I was discharged, the consultant came to me & asked me if I smoked - I said yes. He said " Now - you don't! - If you do - you'll be back here in a few years, and I'll be cutting one of your legs off!! " That somehow got through to me way more than heart/lung problems!

I did the cold turkey thing too. Un-detected stomach ulcer ( not helped by the tobacco diet) that went bad, 3 units of blood, a week in hospital and I realised by the end of the week that I didn't fancy a ciggy. Had tried so many times with gum & strategies, etc but always failed, usually by lunchtime !

Worse bit was the bloke in the bed next me with liver & kidney failure who would be taken in a wheelchair by his wife downstairs for a smoke. Had a young kid, too.

Silly smoking is silly.
 
My first thought was you had quit as a mod, but congratulations and good luck
 
It's got to be easier now - everybody smoked when I started ( mid70s ), now a smoker is comparatively rare ( at least in my present circle of acquaintances ), making smoking illegal in the workplace ( 2007 ) was the real start of it becoming a dying (!!) habit. Before the ban, I got 3 extra days holiday a year as a non-smoker! Just as a matter of interest - I've just looked at the prices of 20 ciggies - at Tesco - £9.75 is the cheapest!!
One thing I did notice after stopping was I could actually taste food properly!

Well done Ian, you will feel so much better for quitting.
I quit 6 years ago after 50 years of smoking.
After many, many attempts at quitting, and failing every time, I tried vaping, and never had another ciggie.
Then I started making my own e-liquid, which was rather successful, which started my "hobby business". So not only did I save money by not smoking, I made money from selling vaping products. I am happy too that I helped many people stop smoking.
I have just stopped the business due to government regulations becoming so onerous, and getting too old to bother, however I still test prototype vaping gear for a Chinese manufacturer, which is rather fun, and it keeps my mind active.
I am very happy for you my friend.

Well done - it'll still 'kick in' at odd times.
I went cold turkey in July, mainly due to my youngest son (who also smoked) being admitted to hospital with a punctured lung at 2 am, three days later transferred to Norfolk and Norwich for it to be repaired, now as we often car share at weekends, I thought that as he's had to give up, I might as well, rather than drive him around and me smoking, so went through all of the baccy I'd got (hand rolled for years) the final smoke was a 'HMP special' where it was just about more paper than tobacco!
PS, got about 90 packets of fag papers, as always bought them by the 100 box! Plenty of tilts, covers and tarps!!
 
Well done Ian, I stopped years ago, I also had to stop drinking for a while as everytime I had a drink I would go round and visit my neighbour for a cig, even now after nearly 20 years, sometimes if someone walks past with a cig and I get a sniff I get a brief craving, but to be honest most of the time I think, did I smell that bad? :flushed:

Best thing I ever did.

Still at it. Today has been a bit of a challenge but have not folded and bought any cigarettes lol. Might have to buy more biscuits though

try crispbread - it takes longer to eat than standard biscuits & doesn't have any sugar ( AND it's high n fibre! ). Putting on weight is one of the downsides of quitting & every little helps
