That's an eye-catching paint job Tim. Nicely done. I often wonder why gloss varnishes give trouble. Same varnish, same technique behaves perfectly and then for no apparent reason it is not gloss, patchy, orange peel, spots etc. I actually hate airbrushing a gloss coat for fear of it going wrong. It's usually towards the end of a build which makes the worry worse.
Yep, I agree Jim. I went with the Klear because it’s acrylic, and last time I used gloss lacquer I couldn’t kill the shine afterwards. Best gloss I’ve used is Zero paints, by the way. Gives a real liquid shine to the finish. I use it on car builds. Tamiya gloss behaves reliably as well.

I've only just read through the thread and it is interesting and good to know of a good 190 kit to get if I want one.
Even if everything is straight from the box it still needs skill to put together neatly and it shows here. You haven't lost any of that skill even with the panel lining...no one can get it straight at one pass so I cheat by going over mine several times with very translucent paint. Patient layering and stopping at just the right level will not obscure panel lining. It all depends on how much you want to reveal.
At 1/48 details on joysticks are hard to notice so I would have missed what you did anyway unless I do a CSI with a torch light. Nice rescue with the wire.
Not many will do specific priming colours but the results speak for themselves.
This is coming on fast. I try to stay away from GBs now as I always can't finish on time. Yes this GB has a sad reason but a good tribute.
Will you have a clean finish or weathered a little?

Thanks Richard. Very good of you to support this one. I find one of the keys to getting panel lining to show through is to wait for the paint to go off before adding the next layer. Wet paint is more translucent than dry paint and it is all too easy to overpaint the panel lines otherwise. Lightening the centre of the panels also helps the effect.
As to weathering, I will add cannon soot and exhaust stains, and possibly hinge streaks from the control surfaces and radiators, but not much else. I like aircraft fairly clean, and don’t think axis aircraft ( in particular) lasted long enough in service to get too beat up.

Thanks Tony. Yep, slogging through the final assembly and detail painting now. Took the masking off this afternoon and didn’t suffer any issues, so onwards and upwards.

Quick question Tim - when you did the decals were they the new Eduard ones that have the removeable carrier film ? I’m asking because Ive just tried to put the spinner spiral on mine and it seemed very strange . The carrier film was really shiny and not very flexible at all , I’m wondering if mine are the new ones and if so how did you cope with the spinner spiral on yours?

. To be honest, as I had a silvering problem due to a pebble-dashed gloss varnish effect, I never tried to strip them either as I was unsure of adhesion. The wing walk dashes and small stencils didn’t go down that well because of this either.

Ah , just my luck . I reckon these must be the new type as the carrier film seems very glossy and quite excessive , usually on Eduard decals the film is very close to the image . In the meantime I’ll see what the spiral dries like and might end up hand painting it

If they are the new ones, stripping them is very easy and extremely effective. I did it on my Zero build last year, and put up a review/SBS on the process, but I expect the images are like shrunken heads now, so not that helpful unfortunately….
