discussion Worst /best kit you’ve built.

After a few shaky moments with my last build I was thinking about the worst and best kits I’ve built.
Not how they turned out in the end but what the quality/engineering etc was like.

Worst was quite a recent build,
a Italeri 1/72 Dakota. Generally poor fit, some structural parts didn’t even touch which made it a challenge but the worst part was a fault with the clear parts. Unfortunately I think it was an air bubble or something inside the plastic as polishing made it worse.
In the end it sapped my mojo so much I took the nuclear option and flew it into the recycling bin

Best was a Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk.I which was sublime. Very detailed but great engineering made it a very enjoyable build.
The transfers get a lot of bad press but if you are careful they are very good.

I will need to look in my cabinet Geoff, but the Italeri A-10 was a bit of a filler eater and a real challenge to create something decent for public viewing. I'm sure I've got some other monsters awaiting me in the stash. I built the Italeri Dakota too, got it completed but as you say it was a struggle.

Best kit... I have many happy memories of some builds. The best in recent memory was the 1/72 Tamiya FW190D I built for the Alan G memorial GB. Hopefully I have many more enjoyable build experiences to come!

I had the worst feeling with an Italeri (2786) "1/48th Lockheed Martin F-16 A Fighting Falcon", bad fit, wrong details. Old kit in a fancy new box. Made me avoid buying Italeri ever again.

I had better fun with the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk.IIa (84206) and Eduard 1/48 A6M3 Zero type 32' (84191)

Worst would be the dh comet recently but that was simply cos it was a 65+ year old kit in the modern world......... I hate Eduard, never had any luck with them.... My jinx brand

Best kit is hard to pin down..... Years ago I did a hasegawa Datsun 240z that went together perfectly that comes to mind

For me the worse was the Kitty Hawk OV-10 Bronco in 1/32 scale. Truly a terrible kit in every way a kit can be bad. Fit, engineering, moulding, instructions, decals, it had no redeeming features at all.

The best, well it has to be the Kotare Bf109k which just pips their Spitfires to the title. It was a dream build of perfectly fitting and engineered parts, superb instructions with some great schemes in the box.

The Eduard Mig-21 or Airfix Sea King, both in 1/48 are superb. I have a Tamiya F-35C which has rave reviews in the stash.
The 1/24 Revell Trabant was equally as awful as the real thing.

Hmm, tough one, as I'm relatively new, not done that many kits, and I don't remember any bad kits from my Yoof?
The recent old Comet kit wasa terrible fit, so maybe that one.
Best one, hmm, possibly my recent SAS Landy? or my last 1:35 scale Tiger tank turned out quite well.... dunno really...

The best, I remember with great fondness, was the Tamiya 1/48 A10C - but that was from doing it 40+ years ago - the last one I made before I went to Uni and took a 'break' for the next 30+ years. Most recently, the Eduard 1/72 F6F - that got me back into the building bug.

Worst, without doubt, Revell Bell Huey - terrible flash, terrible fit, recycled. I do wonder, in hindsight, if I should have given it longer and tried to wrestle it into shape.

Worst is easy. Anything by Amodel, but specifically their 1/144th Canberra. Detail and scale are fine, but the engineering is simply appalling. Everything is just butt joints, and when you've got six separate parts to the fuselage, aligning them is a nightmare
Best kit, probably the current Airfix Mk.I Hurricane, which practically falls together, and I think I've now built, in different forms, three times. Second would be the Tamiya 1/20 Honda RA272 F1, even though that kit is more than thirty-years old. Quality engineering
