discussion Yaks GB Heli build - Amodel Kamov Ka 15 'Hen'

Ok peeps its time to show you my little chopper . Here is my entry for the Helicopter G.B. the Amodel kit of the Kamov Ka 15 in 1/72 scale . This tiny little heli was in service with the Soviet navy in the mid 50's . It was assigned the NATO reporting name 'Hen' and was only 20 ft long with a rotor diameter of 32ft . This makes for a very small kit in 1/72 scale , being only about 3 " long. The kit is typical Amodel , that is short run injection moulding with lots of flash and mould seams to clean up! The detail looks pretty good although the mass of tiny rod like parts that make up the rotor head may well get replaced with styrene section , far easier than trying to clean them all up! Cockpit done, I added some belts from tape and cushions from plastic scraps , everything else is as per kit, its a bit slapdash but it will be fine once its all closed up . Now i can get the fuselage together , then its onto the rotor system , which is going to be a task. As you can see in the close up pics , the nature of this kit (in fact most of Amodels) means that every single part requires major cleaning up , due to flash and mould seams everywhere!! I'm also going to put a thin piece of lead under the cockpit floor , just to make sure it doesnt sit up and beg when i attach the tailplane and endplates/rudders. heres the pics

Nice start Tony but rather you than me with those sprues the small parts are more than likely going to snap if your not careful

How strange, the manufacturer has used more plastic in forming the sprues than the parts themselves ! However, I'm quite sure it won't be a problem for you Tony.

Little bit more progress , but its been slow due to the fact that every single part needs to be cleaned up! The endless scraping and sanding of mould seams is a bit of a pain but necessary. Ive started to assemble the complicated co-axial rotor system , but the instructions arent very helpful , not really showing what goes where and several parts not even numbered . On top of this , all the tiny rod like pieces are unusable due to the aforementioned flash and seams so i am replacing all these with plastic rod and fibre optic fibres . The 6 rotor blades have also been cleaned up and will be gently heated and given a slight droop before fitting. Heres the pics , cheers tony

Boy oh boy i feel your pain Tony makes my Pegasus DH2 kit look like a Tamiya But i know you will make a super kit from this

In a twisted way i think i would like to have a go at this one
