I’m definitely interested in LEDs for my interior tank kits. Just a whole new world to be opened up. Did you know that German panzers had a blue interior light? Im saying that so you get the right colour lamp - it may not necessarily be red!:thumb2::nerd:

Brit subs always used red! I wonder what the science was behind using blue!!!

Good question (although you have a U boat?) Blue also has night vision retention properties. I think the Americans used green interior lights for their tanks during WW2. They also use a green-white paint for some interiors because psychologically, according to studies, it is the best colour for cramped interiors.

Im just speculating here, but maybe the subterranean maps used in U boats had red contour lines? Red light would render them almost invisible. As it was safer to attack at night and many U Boat attacks were carried out on the surface, night vision was still a requisite for using the deck weapons

A modest start......for some recent purchases.....








So I happened to be in Lidl again and noticed that they'd refreshed the stock and had some different kits out that I didn't have!

Oh and for reasons best known to themselves, as you may have seen, they were doing them for 50% off........I mean.....what is a man supposed to do!!

So these two only cost me £6.98!!








And this is the final part of birthday present, unfortunately a few days late for my birthday.

As you'll see this is something of a departure for me being post-WWII.

It's also the first 'pure' US tank kit I have ever bought. I have built Shermans before for my wargaming, which are obviously US designed and built, but they have been the 75mm and 17pdr versions of the M4A4, which was (as far as I know) was not used by the US and was the version was most used by us Brits and other allies.

I put this on pre-order about two months ago with John , as it really piqued my interest. I've had a quick peak in the box and they look very nice.

Unfortunately though and despite being nicely packed, Royal Mail clearly did their best to damage it in transit, as you might see from the bottom right hand corner of the box in particular - the packing box actually had hole in the side. Fortunately, I don't think any damage was done to the kit.

You're not kidding about rare.....I was after one for six months for the below collection of kits I'm putting together. In that time I only saw two or three pop up (including Scalemates) but the prices and/or P&P were prohibitively expensive. In the end, one popped up on Kingkit for price I was willing to pay.

Perhaps it's because it forms such a wonderful counterpoint with those delicious greens, russets and yellows that those hunky soldier boys wear dahlinks!

To my knowledge, oceanographic charts, (WW2 era), were black and white. easy to copy and reproduce. Also as you mention, red light would negate and red markings on a chart. Not good when you are only using sonar and occasional sun sightings to navigate by.
As an ex navigator, when night flying, and the red light was used it played havoc with some important features. Instruments were also illuminated in red at night. Danger areas on aviation maps were marked in red, you don't want to to stray into an active danger area. Additionally, we used to mark areas to avoid, towns villages etc in red.
There was talk when I was serving to start using white light in cockpits but it didn't transpire during my time.

:tears-of-joy: Sorry! Couldn’t resist it! You had a great shop there highlighted by the fact you were in your club plus you got the kits at great prices! Btw the Panther comd tank goes for just under £40 normally however it’s tricky to get hold off now plus you have P&P so double bonus - you still win.

My initial £50+ was based on internet research undertaken at the show in question and the mobile coverage was iffy in places, and so I missed on cheaper prices.....the cheapest delivered I could find was £45, so as you say I basically saved myself the P&P as you say!
