Hi guys,
After much debate we're planning to get a dog (Labrador pup) this summer, still preparing the garden and working out how to manage all the dog things...

I was wondering who has or has had a dog here?

Feel free to show us a picture of your dog.

Cheers

This was Lily who passed away last May. She was a Lhasa Apso and a brilliant house dog. Very lazy and didn’t shed hair. We were lucky to have her for 13 years but she won’t be replaced.

Yes, my family have always had dogs, Mum & Dad, brothers and sisters, etc, but I personally have never had a dog, mainly as my Wife and I have always worked full time, so a dog would have been home alone.
However, now we are both retired, it is something we are thinking about....
Mum and Dad had several dogs when we were kids, including a big labrador and a Dachshund.
Other family have had Rottweilers, Boxers, Staffys, plus a few mongrels.

Used to be a dog person

Border collies and yorkies

This was Fudge my last dog.. ..lived to be nearly 16.....still miss him after 20 years

Im a cat person now... still love dogs but wouldnt want to own one now

Another lovely looking dog. I grew up with dogs, but even thought I haven't been owned by a cat, I do rather like these little furry things now.

No, wouldn't give one house room
They seem to like me about as much as I like them.

Steven, be very careful before you take the leap!

We have had 5 dogs (all rescue) and are all now at rest, buried in the garden.
We lost the last one a couple of years ago and swore we would never have another....again!
But we capitulated or at least I did. There was a big piece of the jigsaw missing. Now that has been filled.

Meet Harley. A rescue dog. He's a Mastiff / Dog de Bordeaux and 16 months old. We have had him for just 2 months.

Harley was on the run, lost and scared, but the local rescue managed to corner him and as they were putting him in their van, a Harley Davidson went by. Hence his name.

Be warned, great companions that they are, they are a huge tie, expensive and are a total commitment.

Think of all the things you won't be able to do and visit. then think of all the fun you could have with a dog.

I'm not trying to put you off, far from it. Dogs are great to have around. Just step back a bit and have a good think......

Good luck.

Ron

Travel is the main issue for me. We've always have had dogs and a couple rescue cats. Cats are easy, but rescue dogs can have difficulties with boarding if dog sitters are not available. Our current Yorkie rescue travels OK, but wouldn't do well if boarded as she has trust issues w/humans. We've had a variety of breeds, but our Black Lab Amos, was the kids' favorite, mine was Fritz, an adult Schnauzer who wandered into our lives and bonded w/our third child as an infant & was very protective & totally fearless. Our only failure was Killer, a Collie/St. Bernard mix that was a goofy lover, but had a taste for styrene & kept digging up the sprinkler systems and eating the kids' toys. We gave him to a retired priest who lived on a farm. Good luck.

Fully agree with this, and it increases even more for cats (you can’t take them on holiday with you) and even more for chickens (cats can go in a cattery, but there is no such thing as a chickenery). I certainly wouldn’t be without our cat, but if you are not used to, and able to tolerate, the restraints animals can put in your life, you might not find ownership as rewarding as it can be.

This was our last dog Merlin, Sadly passed away now and circumstances don't allow for another.

Ok thanks for the input so far guys!

spanner570 yes I first was against the idea of getting a dog for a long time, mostly because of all the restrictions. But in an attempt to make a pro/con list to convince the misses I slowly started embracing the idea, it will get us a lot more outside and bring some life inside the house, as we don't have any kids etc.

I've been reading and watching a lot of training videos since the start of the new year, so I hope we can make a good start this summer...
Cheers 👍

I really do know what you mean Tim, I'm glad you realised it was only meant in jest; i've been reduced to tears at the condition of some rescue animals I've seen. My two lovely Cavalier King Charles' Spaniels will never have to worry about that scenario!
