Scale Model Shop

Is scale modelling a cheap or expensive hobby?

I think most will be surprised just how much we all spend on this hobby, I went to the local model shop to get a few things, glue, tape, paint etc and ended up spending nearly £50 and no, I didn’t succumb to buying a kit!
Good 1/48th model Aircraft can easily cost £50 upwards so it doesn’t take long to rack up a fairly high annual spend.
Agree it’s still very good value for money (per hour) and I love doing it and that’s all that matters in my opinion, so spend spend spend!!
SPEND SPEND SPEND WOW
WELL Farmerboy im glad you eanrt in charge of my wallet lol

Spend, spend, spend !
Those of us of a certain age might remember Viv Nicholson saying that after her pools win way back!
She and her husband blew the lot in short order afterwards.
I think that a theatre musical was made about her famous win.

I think most of it went in death duties when her husband died didn’t it? I remember a play about it years ago. Funnily enough, they also checked them “no publicity” box……

Woah! I'm lucky as I hit previous retirement age some 13 years ago - lucky 13? - with this muppet in charge ...

Well, when the previous shower got in I would’ve retired (well, got my state pension) six months ago, but they moved the goalposts…..however, I never expected anything different from them and I don’t from these, or from those to come…..

I just looked at what I've spent at our very own SMS, and its a fair bit, plus theres stuff I've bought from other model shops and from T'interweb, and from the couple of scale model shows I've now been to......(Sorry John)!

Then there's my little hobby space, not so little now, its slowly expanding, and all the gear that has gone into it, hand tools, paints, adhesives, varnishes, primers, lights, magnifiers, leccy/cordless tools, then there scenic stuff for dioramas, foam, grass, soil, balsa, various materials, rods, plasticard, decals, PE stuff, etc, etc.
It all adds up to quite a bit!

But, as others have said, we get a lot of enjoyment out of the hobby, and for me its not just the time spent actually building a model, its the time I spend on this (and other forums), the time I spend researching a model, getting ref photos, reading books/magazines related to the hobby, watching YT vids, and looking on the web at Scale Model related stuff, etc.

I'm retired now and so on a fixed income, but I'm very lucky that I still have a little bit of "disposable" income that I can spend on hobbies, not just this one. I think the total cost per hour of enjoyment is quite low, especially when compared to some other hobbies.

So for me its totally worth it. (y)

Some things i dont think of it as 'buying' but as 'investing'.

I went thro quite a few cheap chinese air brushes before i bit the bullet and bought a really good one that cost me over 130 quid...... But its quality, it will last years and years

Same with paint brushes..... I try to buy good quality ones.... Costs more but if you look after them they last a long time and do a better job

Paint is a 'consumable', what you put it on with is an 'investment'

I think it can be an expensive or relatively cheap hobby depending on how you approach it.

Starting up costs can be steep as with any hobby as you gather up the gear you need.

I am lucky enough to have all the equipment I need now as I’ve built it up slowly over a number of years.

I also tend to recycle a lot of gear / stash so my actual spend per month is pretty low.

Like a lot of hobbies it can be as expensive as you make it.
I have a few good airbrushes, but only really need one and no doubt only a few good paintbrushes would suffice too.
Many people have literally scores of kits piled up, but could just as easily buy one, complete it then get another.

My main hobby is still travel photography, mainly art deco architecture and Trams both old and newer
We travel mainly by train to European cities and like the extra comfort provided by going first class and staying in nice hotels.
Thing is why not, we are ok financially as is our daughter so why not enjoy life, there ain't no dress rehearsal.
My whole outlook changed when my mum went out shopping got hit by a car crossing the road and died.
Things can change so quickly and every day is worth trying to make the most of.

That has been curtailed a couple of time after my wife had (successful) cancer treatment then slipped and fractured her hip.

Wise words indeed 👍

My two pence or Euros worth. Any hobby is what you want it to be, of course. Just enjoy and make sure you buy a large enough swear box and bulk paracetamol lol.

To be honest i have spent a fair few ££ over the last few yrs. Not helped by loving gadgets and deals!

The attic fleet is rather large and I could probably fight Jutland on the near by lake lol. Julie fighting cancer again was so horrible and depressing, so buying a new kit or gear cheered my up! Been hard hiding my fears from julie i can tell you.

Thats my excuse! But as Julie says, you have earned it, so spend it!! Also had a big effect on building, with all the hospital appointments, operations and dark moments its been so important making sure Julie's is OK and doing all I can to keep up her spirits. Been a long, long horrible rd, but getting there hopefully.

Retirement wise, Teachers pension scheme allows retirement at 60 but I was planning to retire at 62 but at 58 1/2 the joys of ME started. So after a yr on the sick the college did me a good package to finish on my 60th. So thankfully the teachers pension is good, will get my state pension next March when 66 1/2. Most annoying is the payroll guy at the college telling me I had paid 9yrs more NI than the amount needed for a full state pension!

Final word, you can't take it with you!

Hope the treatment goes well, I know exactly what you are describing.
I also bought a fair few things as a diversion to stop me thinking too much about what might happen.
Retired early as well, two months shy of 55 and got my state pension last year at 66. Strangely don't seem to be that much better off although obviously must be.

Many thanks sir

Well doing the basic calculations of adding my teachers pension to the state, deducting the tax allowance, then taking off 20% tax the remains . I should be about £800 a month better off?? I'll know in less than a yr!

Hi Chris

Sorry to confuse, the cancer isn't back but it's the 2nd time in 4 yrs. She beat it first time and we'll beat the bloody thing again!

When Paul the excellent payroll officer told me about the 9yrs NI over pay, he immediately said " before you even ask, NO! You can't get it back" I did cry lol
