I just looked at what I've spent at our very own SMS, and its a fair bit, plus theres stuff I've bought from other model shops and from T'interweb, and from the couple of scale model shows I've now been to......(Sorry John)!
Then there's my little hobby space, not so little now, its slowly expanding, and all the gear that has gone into it, hand tools,
paints, adhesives, varnishes, primers, lights, magnifiers, leccy/cordless tools, then there scenic stuff for dioramas, foam, grass, soil, balsa, various materials, rods, plasticard, decals, PE stuff, etc, etc.
It all adds up to quite a bit!
But, as others have said, we get a lot of enjoyment out of the hobby, and for me its not just the time spent actually building a model, its the time I spend on this (and other forums), the time I spend researching a model, getting ref photos, reading books/magazines related to the hobby, watching YT vids, and looking on the web at Scale Model related stuff, etc.
I'm retired now and so on a fixed income, but I'm very lucky that I still have a little bit of "disposable" income that I can spend on hobbies, not just this one. I think the total cost per hour of enjoyment is quite low, especially when compared to some other hobbies.
So for me its totally worth it.
