Scale Model Shop

Is scale modelling a cheap or expensive hobby?

I think most will be surprised just how much we all spend on this hobby, I went to the local model shop to get a few things, glue, tape, paint etc and ended up spending nearly £50 and no, I didn’t succumb to buying a kit!
Good 1/48th model Aircraft can easily cost £50 upwards so it doesn’t take long to rack up a fairly high annual spend.
Agree it’s still very good value for money (per hour) and I love doing it and that’s all that matters in my opinion, so spend spend spend!!
SPEND SPEND SPEND WOW

Spend, spend, spend !
Those of us of a certain age might remember Viv Nicholson saying that after her pools win way back!
She and her husband blew the lot in short order afterwards.
I think that a theatre musical was made about her famous win.

I think most of it went in death duties when her husband died didn’t it? I remember a play about it years ago. Funnily enough, they also checked them “no publicity” box……

Congratulations on the retirement, by the way. I get to the official retirement age this time next year, unless it moves again….

Woah! I'm lucky as I hit previous retirement age some 13 years ago - lucky 13? - with this muppet in charge ...

Well, when the previous shower got in I would’ve retired (well, got my state pension) six months ago, but they moved the goalposts…..however, I never expected anything different from them and I don’t from these, or from those to come…..

I just looked at what I've spent at our very own SMS, and its a fair bit, plus theres stuff I've bought from other model shops and from T'interweb, and from the couple of scale model shows I've now been to......(Sorry John)!

Then there's my little hobby space, not so little now, its slowly expanding, and all the gear that has gone into it, hand tools, paints, adhesives, varnishes, primers, lights, magnifiers, leccy/cordless tools, then there scenic stuff for dioramas, foam, grass, soil, balsa, various materials, rods, plasticard, decals, PE stuff, etc, etc.
It all adds up to quite a bit!

But, as others have said, we get a lot of enjoyment out of the hobby, and for me its not just the time spent actually building a model, its the time I spend on this (and other forums), the time I spend researching a model, getting ref photos, reading books/magazines related to the hobby, watching YT vids, and looking on the web at Scale Model related stuff, etc.

I'm retired now and so on a fixed income, but I'm very lucky that I still have a little bit of "disposable" income that I can spend on hobbies, not just this one. I think the total cost per hour of enjoyment is quite low, especially when compared to some other hobbies.

So for me its totally worth it. (y)
