Hi guys, completed builds 4 and 5 for the year so far, that's 5 more than last year :thumb2:

I didn't do a build log, as this was an opportunity to experiment with acrylics, weathering, and for the first time, some freehand airbrushing. The kits are Revell's 04374 and Zvezda's 7203. A really old mould that dates back to 1972, but worth the time to make I think. Both were reissued in the 2000's. Very fiddly in places, in need of a little improvement here and there, and that dual wire aerial set up creates a real real mission in 1/72.

The Zvezda decals were not good quality and had no protective paper on them, so rather than risk it, I sourced spares from the Revell sheet and was able to create one of the three options from that kit. That meant I had two goes at creating the two tone grey scheme and practice my freehand airbrushing. Here are the results:

Zvezda, depicting 'Silver 06' flown by a Captain W M Schkurenko, 137 GIAP, Riga, October 1944. I can find no reference to a 'Captain Schkurenko'.

Revell, depicting 'White 52' flown by Captain N P Puschkin, 2 GIAP, Dnepr Front, September 1943. There are photos of La-5 aircraft from this Mongolian unit (the slogan is to do with Mongolians), but again no reference to the pilot.

All paints and weathering on this build were Mig Ammo, the aerial wire Uschi's Fine Rigging Thread.

Thanks for looking in, I hope you like my Russians.

Joe,
a nice pair! The La-5FN is a really purposeful fighter and these really look the part. I made the Zvezda 1/48 La-5FN a while ago, and it's still one of my nicest models to put together.
The Russians didn't normally go in for unit markings (secrecy?), and it can be almost impossible to identify aircraft just from photos - usually just a number, and of course a patriotic slogan!

Joe

They are both, very very nice indeed and you should be vey proud of your efforts on those.

Very well done indeed.

Andrew

Superb builds joe , right up my ulitsa ! The old Italeri moulds still make for a good model and the revell decals are their usual excellent quality. Ive built this in the same white 52 scheme . Very impressive freehand spraywork ,too especially in 1/72 ! Za zdarovye ! Tony

Great work Joe. The paint work looks really good.

Thanks Dave. Here's a photo of that unit, including what appears to be the subject aircraft 'White 52' behind the pilot. Some colour profiles online show it having a yellow cowl, but the instructions called for red, and I like the red.

Thanks Andrew, I'm quite happy with the freehand camouflage attempts for a first go.

They look great. Lovely finish on them.
Thank you Tim

Thanks Tony. I had to search for the term 'ulitsa', and I thought this might be up your alley/avenue :smiling3: Za zdarovye!

A lovely pair of models, really nice.

Andy.
Thanks Andy

Both very nice Joe, I especially like the white 52 scheme.
Thanks Mike. I like 52 as well, I think it's the red cowl that does it for what is otherwise a monotone scheme.

Great work Joe. The paint work looks really good.
Thank you Colin

Cracking builds there Joe.
Cheers Ian!
