1/72 HMS Victory Cross Section

The next job was to fit the rider tops and the knees under the deck beam supports. A notch had to be cut from the knees to allow them to fit correctly.
Then all painted white.
The knees were fitted first. The blue foam is just to hold them in place while the glue dries.
The rider tops fit above the riders in the hold. The left and right ones are different heights.
The front rider top fits over a grating and leaves a tiny gap. I filled this with a small off cut of wood.

Sorry for such a long gap between updates. Better weather and a list of jobs from "the boss" means less bench time.
The next job was the beams for the lower gun deck.
All painted off white.
Most are fitted but some will fit later after the pump columns go in.
The lower gun deck bulwarks were lined and the gun ports framed. The last plank had to be notched to fit around the deck beam supports.
There was an odd gap. Not sure if it was my fault or the kit's but easily filled with a scrap of wood.

Progress is steady but slow. The next few steps are quite fiddly. Now HMS Victory had her hull, below the waterline, clad with copper plates ( at least for part of her life). The kit does not provide these plates although they are easy to buy from ship modelling sites and they are pretty cheap. I thought they would look good so bought some.
The first problem is cutting them. A knife is no good as they are a bit thicker than normal PE and scissors cut but distort the plate edge. They need to be cut accurately as filing them is very time consuming and also easily distorts the plate. So out with my Steve J recommended guillotine. I made a placement jig with Dymo tape.
Worked a treat. Next issue was what glue to use. I found that Gator Acrylic Hobby Glue did fine. So set to .....
Until after many hours ...
Next up are the midshipmen's hammocks - another fiddly bit :tongue-out3:

The next job is to fit out the orlop deck because it will be hard to reach once the lower gun deck decking is in place. This area has the chests (made earlier) a few buckets and the midshipman's hammocks including their hanging brackets on the beams. There are also deck support columns to go in plus deck beam reinforcements.

I think that's enough for now - getting too photo heavy :rolling: I have actually just about finished the hammocks but I leave that until they are fitted.

Just caught up with this Jim. It’s looking fantastic. Love the copper sheeting, and the Orlop deck (is that correct?) detail is coming on a treat. Have fun with the grand daughter. We are seeing our daughter next weekend, and that’s the first time since September!

Fantastic skills there Jim, has to be one of the most interesting models I've seen. Worthy of an early dogs award.

I am plodding on with the hammocks - honest, but the next job is to fit the pumps that come up through the pump well. They are provided as metal castings (white metal?). Casting seams have to be filed off.
All done
The instructions tell you to join sections with CA. I thought that epoxy would be stronger and would also fill gaps better. I glued them against lolly sticks to ensure they were straight.
Just one casting had a bend in it. I left it alone as I read somewhere that this metal is very brittle and it likely to snap rather than bend straight.
The 4 chain pumps have to be fixed in a 'V' shape with temporary wooden spacers.
All the pumps are painted white. The chain pumps have black rings.
Now the chain pumps fit into rectangular holes in the bottom of the pump well
..... but they tell you to lift them into position and glue against deck beams :rolling: That would mean they were hanging with a very small glued contact area. I fitted a small section of styrene rod on the base so that the pumps were at the correct height but resting on their bases.
So all pumps fitted and glued to the deck beams - finally :tongue-out3:
